Cold symptoms are annoying and often painful. Certain foods help us to strengthen the immune system again and are a great way to treat a cold with home remedies.

 Cold infections are uncomfortable and, despite the best prevention, are not always avoidable. If you are affected, you want to get rid of the typical complaints as soon as possible. In this case, patients must be patient, because a cold must be literally interpreted. Responsible doctors know this and advise the sick person about simple home remedies and a diet that supports the healing process. 

Antibiotics do not provide relief because they are only effective against bacteria. A “normal” cold is a viral disease, and the best way to get rid of it is to revive the weakened immune system – certain foods can help.

Best foods to treat a cold with home remedies

Vitamin C – not just in lemons!

It is well known that our body needs vitamin C to stay healthy. If you have a cold, you should go a step further in terms of vitamin C supply and use the antioxidant effect of the vitamin. During a cold, so-called free radicals spread in the body that attack our cells. Vitamin C works against this and makes it harmless. In general, 100 mg of vitamin C per day are recommended, but you may also like to have more during a cold. These fruits and vegetables are a good source:

Chicken soup like grandma’s

You have probably heard that chicken soup should be the perfect food for a cold – but do you also know why? Chicken soup – freshly cooked and not canned – in combination contains many ingredients that can help reduce the cold. On the one hand, it is of course the vegetables that are used to cook the soup, but there are also some “anti-cold boosters” in the chicken itself. For example, it contains zinc, which reduces cough and runny nose, and carnosine, which strengthens the immune system.

➔ Basic recipe for chicken soup:

Rinse 1 soup chicken under running water, pat dry with kitchen paper and place in a sufficiently large saucepan. Now fill up enough water until the chicken is completely covered. Add a little salt and 3-4 grains of allspice and put the saucepan on the stove to boil. Clean a bunch of soup greens and an additional four to five carrots and cut into pieces and add to the chicken. Now cook the chicken for at least one hour (depending on the size) and skim the foam from time to time so that the chicken soup stays nice and clear.

Now it is understandable that it is better to lie on the couch with a cold rather than on the stove. Alternatively, certain micronutrients can help with a cold , or taking zinc as a lozenge or in a dissolved form for gargling.

Ginger – small tuber with a big effect

Ginger has experienced a real hype as a home remedy for colds in recent years. If you suffer from headache and limb pain in addition to cough, runny nose, hoarseness, you should include ginger in your diet. The ginger can be added freshly grated to almost all hearty dishes or as tea to compensate for the increased fluid requirement during a cold. The sharpness in the ginger stimulates the blood flow to the mucous membranes, which in turn clears a blocked nose.

Slice a 3 cm piece of ginger and pour it with a liter of boiling water. Add two to three slices of organic lemon and let everything steep for 5 – 10 minutes.

Beetroot – natural pain reliever

Even though beetroot is not everyone’s taste, the vegetables are a real mineral and vitamin bomb . Folic acid, calcium, iron, magnesium and vitamins B12 and C are in the beet. Particularly interesting in connection with a cold, however, is the striking red dye. The so-called betanin is a good anti-inflammatory, especially for complaints in the mouth and throat area.

Garlic and onions – bacterial killers and cough relievers

Two white bulbs that you either like or don’t like. Both garlic and onions leave a not so pleasant smell in the air after consumption. If you are sick, you should not bother about it – you will most likely be lying in bed or on the sofa most of the time.

  • Garlic is best known for allowing our blood to flow through our veins more easily, thus preventing vasoconstriction and promoting digestion . In the event of a cold, garlic is said to have an antibacterial effect and is therefore also wonderful as a flu remedy.
  • The onion, or rather onion juice, is a tried and true home remedy for stubborn coughs. To do this, cut an onion into small pieces, put them in a fire-proof bowl and sprinkle sugar over them. The bowl is now placed in the 80-100 degree oven. As soon as onion juice has formed, you can consume it in spoons.

Both garlic and onions can be eaten raw, or chopped / grated integrated into the food.
