What causes nausea?

Whether it is an intolerance , rotten food, pregnancy or an infection – nausea is a warning signal of the body when it comes to harmful substances. If it is accompanied by vomiting, it is a protective reflex in which the body wants to eliminate harmful substances.

The vomiting center in the brain is closely linked to the digestive tract of the human body and the bloodstream. With slight stimulation of the vomiting center, only the feeling of nausea is felt, a strong irritation leads to vomiting.

For example, as soon as the stomach experiences a feeling of fullness after a meal that is too large, this information is transmitted to the vomiting center through impulses.

The causes of nausea are not always due to a single cause. Nausea is a symptom that can result from a variety of conditions, but after you identfy the causes you can stop nausea with home remedies. The most common causes of nausea are:

  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Food poisoning

It sounds trivial, but it helps enormously with nausea and above all gastrointestinal complaints: Only eat easily digestible food. If you experience nausea, avoid hard-to-digest, fatty meals and return to foods such as rusks, pretzel sticks or bananas. Furthermore:

  • Drink: In order to provide the body with sufficient fluid , a vegetable soup is particularly well suited as a home remedy for nausea.
  • Make sure you do not put on too tight clothes. A belt that presses on the stomach and the feeling of nausea only amplified, however, is to be avoided.
  • Feel nausea, go for a while in the fresh air. Sit on the balcony or in the garden or alternatively go for a walk.
  • Another proven home remedy for nausea: tea. The best varieties are chamomile, peppermint, fennel or ginger. The ingredients soothe the stomach and so make the feeling of nausea subsides. Fennel, anise or caraway teas also have a digestive and antispasmodic effect.
  • Lemon extract is also a good home remedy for nausea. Drizzle a few drops of the lemon juice into a glass of water and eat it. Be sure to avoid carbonated water!
  • Rest and relaxation are the nuts and bolts. Relax at home and avoid stressful situations. A good night’s sleep is best in a comfortable position where the feeling of nausea is least noticeable.

What to look for in addition to home remedies for nausea

If you feel nausea during a diagnosed gastrointestinal inflammation, you do not have to worry about it as it is the natural concomitant of this condition. In some people, the nausea occurs after a very winding car ride or a boat trip on shaky lake. This is due to the irritation of the organ of balance. Nausea does not have to have bad causes or consequences, but may be accompanied by other, more dramatic symptoms.

As long as you only have nausea and it does not occur more often, you can use nausea to treat and relieve the above home remedies. For concomitant symptoms such as dizziness, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, blurred vision or headache , however, you should consult a doctor to have your health more closely examined. This also applies if the nausea persists or should last longer.
