How to paint walls correctly: expert methods and tips

How to paint

To paint a wall you need paint, the right tools and our tips. Then nothing can go wrong! There are many things to consider when painting. When it is clear whether the walls are to be painted white or you have decided on a different shade, the preparation for the job begins. The more careful the preliminary work, the better the result when you want to paint walls correctly.

Paint walls correctly: do the right preparation

Before emptying,  completely empty the room  or layer any remaining objects in the center of the room to cover it with foil, as well as the floor. Then mask baseboards, window sills, door frames and so on with masking tape and not only remove all lamps, but also all nails or screws. If you want to reuse holes later, put a match in the marker.

Important :  Before disassembling of sockets and bulbs,  power  off! Do not rush to the roller and the brush, but examine the areas to be painted for damage. Small cracks and (dowel) holes need to be  filled  and, if necessary, ground smooth after drying. If new wallpaper or newly plastered walls are to be painted, it should be with respect to the surface no problems. It may look different if old paint is present. In this case, the old paint must first be tested for its adhesion if you want to paint the walls correctly.

How to test the old paint

A bad background is formed by colors that chalk when painted over, that darken when dabbed with a wet finger, or that do not pass the adhesive test. You press an adhesive strip against the wall and pull it off again, if paint residues stick to the tape, the surface is not paintable. In such a case, it is advisable to wash off the wall and treat it with a base. Tiefgrund penetrates into the loose paint layer and the top layer of plaster and forms a solid layer of it.

Painting walls: material and tools

To paint walls you need a basic equipment. This consists of bucket or paint tray, scraping grid, fur roller and corner brush. Interior walls are now painted exclusively with finished wall paints (dispersion paints), which are available in various qualities at the hardware store or the paint shop. How much area you can paint with one color is usually on the container. If you prefer rough surfaces, expect a little more.

In addition to the preparations for rooms and underground as well as providing the selected color, the right tools are a prerequisite for a successful work. Indispensable are a paint roller for uniform application of paint and a scraping grid . The size of the roll depends on the size and accessibility of the wall surface.

For inaccessible areas, for example behind radiators, there are rollers with a small diameter and extra long handle. There are also special wheels for a remote transition between wall and ceiling or for the corners.

Cheap products made of plush or vestan are not recommended, better are rollers based on polyamide or polyacrylic. Lambskin roles are expensive, but are in the front stroke result. Wet the roll before the first  coat, then open the fibers and the color is easier to absorb.

For painting high walls or the ceiling, the use of a telescopic rod makes sense, thereby eliminating repeated ladder climbing. However, the effort is greater when stroking with the rod. Corners are very easy to stroke with long-handled, angled  radiator  brushes, but some also prefer the special corner scooter.

In order to avoid constant cleaning of the brushes and rollers between the operations, one packs the  tool  between in household foil or plastic bags. After completion of the work, the tool should be cleaned immediately to prevent the ink residue from drying. In the case  of emulsion paint, it is sufficient to  wash the implements thoroughly with water.

How to paint walls properly

In general:  If you want to paint walls correctly, first brush or roll the ceiling, then the walls. And always work with the light from the window away. Carefully paint the edges with a brush or a small roll, followed by a large roller (on the telescopic handle).

The paint is usually applied in corners and on edges and hard to reach places with the brush on surfaces with fur roll. Long-pile rollers are better suited for low-viscosity paints. They absorb more of them and are therefore more suitable for coarsely porous walls (rough plaster). With short-pile rollers, pasty and solid colors can be processed better. They are usually smaller and therefore easier in the hand.

The entire ceiling and individual wall surfaces should be painted in one operation and breaks avoided, as otherwise later approaches may be visible, that is, always “wet in wet” work and roll the role as long on the scraping until nothing drips. Begin by painting the walls with the corners and on the side of the window. Follow the light into the room. To make the surface as uniform as possible, it is advisable to make wall sections about 1 square meter in size and fill them with “M” or “W” movements, then make the fine line (“sizing”) from top to bottom.

If you work with multicolored paint, and want to put a wall in the room differently colored, for example, the corresponding surface must be masked precisely, preferably with flexible painter’s crepe. Important: After painting, remove the strips as long as the paint is still moist, because otherwise the color edge frays “unclean”. If the first coat does not completely cover – for example, on a very dark background – the paint must be thoroughly dry before the second coat, otherwise unsightly “rolling strips” will be created.

Special tools for the walls

  • The corner brush was designed for the 90 degree interior corner. The conical roller body is completely covered with real lambskin. The hanger is 40 cm long. The reel and yoke are interchangeable. Price in the specialized trade: about 12 euros.
  • The radiator roll is a classic among special rolls. With the flexible handle their possibilities have been significantly expanded.
  • Less well known is the ideal for inaccessible places . On the metal plate a velor pouch is pushed and knotted. Combined with the flexible strap, it is unbeatable.

How much paint is needed?

The so-called range information on the container (paint bucket) refers to the painting of smooth walls. But if a rough surface such as textured wallpaper, rough woodchip or rough plaster is to be deleted, the range is reduced by 10 to 30 percent.

Pay attention to the incidence of light and always start your paintings at the window. If they roll away from the light, avoid any possible signs after drying. Ensure a uniform room temperature.

How to paint around a radiator

Behind the radiator it is not so easy to brush. But with the right technology, it works. Tip: Mask off the pipe. There are always problems behind the radiator. A tip to avoid smearing the pipes: fold a sheet of paper around the pipe and paint with the radiator brush behind it.
