Whether you want to do without plastic or just want to have an overview of the ingredients – making shower gel yourself is not difficult at all! We explain how to do it.

Doing your own shower gel sounds complicated and expensive at first. But that’s not it! You only need a few inexpensive ingredients and a little bit of time.

Ingredients for the homemade shower gel

The basic recipe for your own gel consists of the following ingredients:

  • 40g natural soap, core soap works as an alternative
  • 400 ml water
  • Approx. 2 tbsp oil (e.g. vegetable oil such as sunflower or olive oil)

Other ingredients that you can add according to taste or need:

  • Thickeners (e.g. cornstarch or locust bean gum)
  • Volatile oil
  • honey
  • Herbs

Make shower gel: instructions

  1. First, the soap needs to be crushed . You can either grate the soap finely with a grater or cut it into small pieces with a knife.
  2. In the next step, fill the water and soap pieces in a saucepan and heat the whole thing over medium-high heat.
  3. Stir with a whisk until the soap dissolves.
  4. Then add the oil and stir.
  5. Take the pot off the stove and let the mixture cool down.

Scents to add

That’s it with the basic recipe for the homemade gel. In theory, you can take a shower with it just as it is.

However, there are other ingredients that you can use to customize your gel , especially when it comes to scent.Important: Most extra ingredients should only be added during the cooling phase, i.e. when the shower gel is only lukewarm.

For example, you can refine your gel in the following ways:

  • You can personalize the fragrance of your shower gel with essential oils . How about, for example, lavender, citrus or peppermint?
  • Even cold honey works well as an extra ingredient. It moisturizes and has an antibacterial effect. It is particularly important here that it is only added when the mass has cooled, otherwise important enzymes will be lost.
  • Herbs can also refine the shower gel. However, these are not added after cooking, but during the process. Then they are screened again.

Tips for the right consistency

Depending on the soap used, the consistency of your shower gel may end up being too solid or too liquid. You can also help here. However, it is important that you wait until the gel has cooled completely. Only then can you really assess the consistency.

If the gel is too solid, you can add a little hot water. If it is too liquidthickeners help. Cornstarch must be stirred into hot liquid and boiled, locust bean gum also works in cold gel.

The homemade shower gel contains no preservatives, which is why it does not last as long as the articles from the drugstore. You should therefore use it up in one to a maximum of two weeks. However, you can also freeze it.

In this way, they receive a cost-effective, sustainable and easy-to-implement alternative to conventional drugstore products, which they can also keep for longer periods.
