The right wine is crucial for a good mulled wine

To make a really good mulled wine, you need a good wine as a base. It shouldn’t be of poor quality, but it doesn’t have to be unearthly expensive either.

We therefore recommend a wine that tastes good in harmony with the intense spices of the mulled wine. It does not have to assert itself strongly, but it should be able to resonate. Fruity, semi-dry wines are the best choice.

Sweet, mellow wines are unsuitable, as neither the spices can prevail with them nor the amount of sugar can be regulated. It shouldn’t be too strong a wine, because the taste of rum should not be underestimated.

The following utensils are required for every mulled wine:

  • big pot
  • measuring cup
  • knife
  • Cutting board
  • citrus press

Classic mulled wine recipe

classic mulled wine

The classic mulled wine requires the following ingredients:

  • 1 liter of red wine
  • 50 ml rum
  • 7 cloves
  • 2 oranges
  • 2 sticks of cinnamon
  • 1 star anise
  • 50 g brown rock sugar

  1. Wash the oranges. Cut one orange in half and squeeze it with the lemon squeezer. Cut the other orange into thin slices.
  2. Now add the red wine, the spices (cloves, star anise and cinnamon), the freshly squeezed orange juice and the orange notes to the pot.
  3. Heat everything on a low level and stir well again and again. The not yet finished mulled wine must never boil, otherwise the aroma will be lost. Keep heating until everything is hot but not boiling.
  4. Take the saucepan off the heat and add the rum and sugar.
  5. Now heat everything well again until the sugar has dissolved. Even now the mulled wine shouldn’t boil.
  6. Finally, the spices and the orange slices are sieved off and the mulled wine is immediately served hot.

Mulled wine with white wine

easy mulled wine recipes. White wine

White wine is becoming more and more popular as a base for mulled wine. Anyone who opts for this variant of the mulled wine should opt for a young, fruity white wine that is a bit spicy and tart. With it, the spices complement each other even better for white wine. The following ingredients are required to make mulled wine with white wine (white mulled wine):

  • 1 liter of white wine
  • 500 ml of white grape juice
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 teaspoons of honey
  • 6 orange slices

  1. Wash the orange and cut it into thin slices.
  2. Put the white wine and white grape juice in a saucepan with the honey, cinnamon sticks and orange peel.
  3. Unlike red wine, white wine can boil. The mulled wine mixture is brought to the boil while stirring constantly.
  4. Then turn the heat down and let the mulled wine steep for around 10 minutes.
  5. Now just put everything in a cup and enjoy hot.
