How to dress for a job interview: 6 rules for women

dress for a job interview

What is the best way to dress for a job interview? Our guide outlines the 6 rules women should follow when choosing outfits for job interviews.

Do you have an interview soon and do not know what to wear? We’ll tell you which outfits are particularly well received during the interview and which clothing is a real no-go.

First the excruciating wait for positive feedback, then the nervousness before the big day: an interview gets on your nerves. It’s good if ‘woman’ has one less worry and the clothes for the interview are already set. Because when it comes to the outfit, there are six golden rules.

How to overcome nerves in an interview

6 rules to dress for a job interview

1. Clean and tidy

Sounds obvious and still: This point is extremely important. Because HR personnel pay attention to the smallest details during an interview.

A nondescript coffee stain that accidentally landed on your clothes? A no-go! Make-up edges on the white blouse? Don’t go at all! A run in your tights? Under no circumstances!

You play it safe if you have a change of top and spare tights in your luggage. So check your clothes in the mirror just before the interview!

2. Sex sells? Not in the interview

An absolute no-go in the job interview: sexy clothes. After all, the other person should not be convinced by your visual stimuli, but by your skills. In personal language, irritating clothing means: With its appearance, it tries to cover up its weaknesses.

The ironed (!) Blouse should therefore remain buttoned up. Combine it with a plain blouse depending on the job, a pair of tidy jeans, dress pants or a skirt. A lint-free blazer completes the overall look.

3. Less is more with accessories

Accessories are part of clothing, and this also applies to interviews. But you shouldn’t overdo it. Eye-catching bling-bling earrings combined with a glittering statement chain belong in the club, not in the interview.

Subtle jewelry is better , such as a filigree chain, subtle earrings AND: a wristwatch. It shows your counterpart that you don’t lose track of time. And time management is the be-all and end-all in the job.

4. Not too high heels

The following applies to the shoes for your interview outfit: they should be chic and simple. Classic pumps are a safe bank. They fit the serious occasion better than sandals.

You are at war with high shoes and cannot walk well in them? Then it’s better to wear flat shoes like elegant leather lace-ups for the job interview. The reason: a shaky walk immediately makes you look unsafe.

5. Subtle fragrance instead of perfume cloud

The impression that the HR employee gets from you during the interview does not only count in clothing. Your scent is also crucial, because humans are nose animals. When choosing the perfume, you should choose a fragrance that is not too intrusive. And just don’t bathe in perfume – a few splashes are enough. An intrusive cloud of fragrance scares you off!

6. Naturalness is key!

What do HR managers want from job interviews? Naturalness! But that is easier said than done. Because often the nervousness puts a spanner in the works. But what we have in hand: naturalness in terms of make-up and styling.

The complexion should look fresh and radiant for the interview, impurities and shadows under the eyes should be covered. Smokey eyes in combination with eye-catching lipstick? Rather not! And: don’t forget your fingernails! A manicure with subtle nail polish, whether done by yourself or by a professional, is part of the preparation for the interview.

Interview: Which outfits for which job?

So much for theory, now we come to practice. What the optimal clothes for the interview look like depends on the job you are applying for.

If you introduce yourself in a bank, you should appear more classical than if you introduce yourself for a job in the creative industry. Very important: You have to feel comfortable in your clothes!
