How to detect and remove mold in the house

detect and remove mold in the house

The common mold is the nightmare of every property owner. Leaving it alone, means threatened damage to health. Therefore, something should be done about it immediately after mold has been discovered. We reveal how to recognize the mold and initiate effective first aid measures to detect and remove mold in the house.

Mildew is always an interaction of too high humidity and an ideal breeding ground. Three causes of moisture come into consideration:

  • Either water enters the masonry from the outside or from defective pipes.
  • Or an old water damage was not professionally drained.
  • Or the moisture is created by condensing air humidity from the room itself. Say: insufficient or incorrect airing.

We’ll show you how to recognize mold and what you can do as a first aid to fight the mold. In general, however, you should only fight molds with appropriate protective measures!

Detect and remove mold in the house: How to recognize mold

Dark spots on the wall, usually in the corners, are a first important indication of mold. But you will only get the last certainty through tests from the pharmacy or by mold experts on site.

In addition to the visible stains, the mold infestation is often identified by a musty-rotten smell, which is difficult in the air.

Even slightly moist spots on the wall can indicate possibly even poisonous spores, not least allergies and irritation of the mucous membranes are a serious sign, if there is no other conclusive explanation. This is why it is crucial to detect and remove mold in the house as soon as possible.

Warning! Do not play down even the smallest patches of mold: the spores can be spread well beyond the visible areas in the plaster and in the walls, thus creating serious health hazards for all residents.

Act with caution

If you have a mold, you should immediately go to the disposal. Please do not sleep in the affected room or spend unnecessarily long there. Always ventilate well.

Avoid the room until the final refurbishment and wear disposable gloves and mouthguards during all work and examinations – available in every well-stocked supermarket and help against the attack of the spores that are distributed in the air.

Textiles which have come into contact with the affected area (curtains, curtains) must be washed. In the case of visibly large, moist stains on which the plaster possibly flakes off or the wallpaper swells, you should seek advice from designated mold experts.

This can measure the degree of mold and moisture and, if necessary, initiate further steps (test holes for sensors, install dry ventilator). An investment that is definitely worthwhile.

In room corners, mold surfaces are apt to form, because here the heat transfer to the outside and the wall surface temperature are the lowest

First aid against mold

Which means should you use for the destruction of molds depends on the surface condition. A distinction must be made between smooth, non-absorbent surfaces such as tiles or mineral substrates such as plaster.

The first aid measures are well suited to kill the fungus immediately, but are only the first step. For all types of mold control, it is essential to eliminate the cause. Many of the remedies contain chlorine, which on the one hand smells bad, but on the other hand offers a very good efficacy and a preventive effect.

Renovation measures

If you want to repaint, wallpaper or paint your walls anyway, you can immediately add a mold-inhibiting additive. This works for all water-based building materials. One liter is sufficient for about 40 liters of paint.

Spray on the affected areas with a distance of 5-10 centimeters on the affected areas, rinse well after 10-15 minutes. The amount of the agent depends on the building material. The quantities given on the packaging should be meticulously met.
