  1. Click on the pencil edit icon in the top right corner of the “About” (summary) section
  2. Scroll down to the “Media” section and click “Upload”
  3. Select your resume file
  4. Add a title and description and click “Apply”
  5. Click “Save” to return to your profile

You can also upload other files to this section, such as your publications, presentations, links to a portfolio, or even slide decks. LinkedIn allows you to upload common text files such as .pdf, .doc, .docx, .rtf, .odt, and .txt formats.

As in other social networks, the same applies to LinkedIn: A professional, personable and appealing image has a significant impact on the impact of your profile. Make sure that your picture suits you both in terms of color and appearance and that it conveys the desired effect.

Contact information

If you want to make contacts and build relationships, you should of course offer appropriate contact options. You do not necessarily have to provide all possible contact information. Rather concentrate on the channels that you actively use and through which you can really be reached.

Profile url

LinkedIn offers you the option of adapting your profile URL to make it more readable – and easier to remember. Make sure to use this option and be sure to choose a URL that is easily identifiable to you or your primary website. Not only do you increase the chance of being found by others, the links with your profile URL also look nicer and more elegant.

Added value

In order to attract other members’ attention and to create real added value in the network, you should ideally share interesting content on a daily basis. These can be your own articles as well as articles and contributions from other sites and users. If you repeatedly share the content of certain authors in a targeted manner, you can also attract their attention.


Before using any social network for your job search, you should define your keywords. You then build these keywords into all profiles – naturally also in the description of your LinkedIn profile. This increases your visibility in the context of the respective keyword and gets readers to associate you with these terms.

LinkedIn offers you the opportunity to incorporate videos, slideshows or other media into the various stages of your professional career. Make use of this option and include meaningful videos or media here that give visitors to your profile an impression of your work or philosophy.

There are LinkedIn profiles on which you can find dozens of projects. This may seem impressive at first, but it doesn’t make sense. Because when choosing your projects you should concentrate on the really relevant ones that underline your competence and focus. An oversupply seems arbitrary and makes the search unnecessarily difficult for HR and headhunters.

Maintain your contacts

If an opportunity arises, however, it is perfectly legitimate to seek a brief exchange, for example to congratulate the person you are talking to on a professional success or a job change and thus to keep the network active.

At the same time, maintaining contacts on LinkedIn means that you have to sort out names every now and then. Some contacts are out of date, no longer fit your current situation or you no longer even know how the contact came about. A smaller, but active and useful network is better than simply collecting large numbers that donate no benefit.
