How to apply for a job: expert tips

Find a job

Personnel usually have to deal with a wealth of documents that interested parties send to them to apply for a job. Sometimes a hundred candidates come together for an advertised position.
It is therefore not so easy for HR managers and department heads to process the mountain of applications. Finally, they should decide as quickly as possible who is invited to the interview and who receives a rejection.

How professionals apply for a job

The application documents will help them to achieve the dream job they are looking for in the desired company. After writing both the letter of motivation and the CV, you should therefore consider how to improve the application with simple means – not only to make it easier for personnel, but also to be positively evaluated. How do professionals who write high-quality applications for strategic job mistakes and benefit from a higher salary than before for each new job? What can be learned from them?

1. You should pay attention to this

The first criterion for the decision of personnel is always the application documents. By reading the texts in a cross-reading way, the managers get an idea of which applications are of quality and thus move on to the next round. They also decide which documents will be added to the “unfortunately no stack”.

A flawless and stylistically perfect application letter ensures that the application meet the strict eyes of the personnel. It also increases the chance of being invited to the interview.
But everyone probably knows one thing: you are blind to mistakes you make yourself. Here’s a typo, because forget a dash. In addition, one generally tends to use far too many stop words and inappropriate adverbs. The problem with that? You don’t notice it yourself. As a result, weaknesses in one’s own documents cannot be corrected.

The situation is different for those professionals who deal with texts on a daily basis. At first glance, you will notice where the linguistic weaknesses lie in an application. Therefore, you take a lot of time and read the application documents carefully. To do this, they go through sentence by sentence. This not only improves obvious errors, but also optimizes expression and style.
One should take an example of this: without sufficient time and the patience to repeatedly enter the text, one cannot protect one’s application from typos and lopsided sentences.

2. Individual yet error-free

In practice, it has been shown that it is not a good idea to use standardised motivational letters and CVs. In this way, it is difficult to stand out from the competitors. Personnel are well aware of such documents.

Rather, one scores with individual documents that stand out from the crowd. An application with a personal touch, which reflects one’s personality and strengths, can convince the future boss. This reduces the risk of sinking into what may be a large number of applicants. So have you won a prize for your master’s thesis, done a great internship, can speak an unusual language or have an interesting hobby? Then you should mention that!

But be careful: if you do not use forms and typical phrases in your application, the
Danger of instilling errors. It can happen that certain expressions are used more frequently than average and an unfavorable sentence position is used. Here, too, proofreading is extremely important!

3. Investing in the future

Professionals create a solid collection of materials for their applications from the outset. All certificates and internships are individually scanned and labeled in the best quality. In addition, you should always keep your CV up-to-date and have it available in several variants, e.g. tabular, as a graphic model, etc. But also the cover letter should be in stock in an optimal version. Certain descriptions of one’s own competences always remain the same and the formatting does not have to be reinvented every time. If you then go to a new application, you just have to add.

This works best if you have created your own application documents perfectly or commissioned a professional application service with them. Such a template can be reused again and again. However, you can also have it done with an application service – for example, if you apply to similar companies in the same industry, but do not want to send the exact same cover letter 10 times.
In total, professionals write three things correctly when applying: they take a lot of time to apply and pay particular attention to spelling and expression. In addition, they pay attention to individuality, so that they do not appear anonymous and grind through the grid. Thirdly, they always invest in the future and thus in their application. They can also be helped by application services and are always prepared for a job change by keeping their documents ready for it.
