What are bath bombs?

First of all to clarify what a bath bomb actually is: It is a compilation of various bath additives, fragrances and caring substances that are added to the water while bathing and then dissolve. They color the water brightly and maybe even bubble. Of course, that means great fun for children. That is why the sale of bath bombs is currently booming.

In addition to being made for personal use, bath bombs are therefore also ideal as gift ideas. The basic recipe is completely simple and can be varied as desired. And the great thing: Your children can help with the production and look forward to the next bathing fun right away. So just give it a try. You will be amazed how easy it is.

Make your own DIY bath bombs: you need …

  • 50 g of cocoa butter (eg as chips)
  • 50g milk powder
  • 75 g of citric acid
  • 30 g cornmeal
  • 150 g of soda
  • 1 tbsp almond oil
  • 1 tbsp. Fragrance oil
  • if necessary: food coloring
  • dried (edible) flowers

Alternatively: coconut oil instead of cocoa butter, olive oil instead of almond oil, starch instead of corn flour. You also need a silicone mold for the bath balls.

How to do it: short instructions

First mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl, ie milk powder, citric acid and cornmeal. Next, if available, add the flowers, according to taste. Then mix everything with a spoon. Melt the cocoa butter in the microwave or water bath until it is liquid. Then add the almond and fragrance oil. Add the cocoa butter oil mass to the dry mass and knead. If you want, you can also add food coloring. ‘
Fill the finished “dough” into the silicone mold or simply form balls with your hands. Now the bath bombs only have to harden. Best stored overnight in a cool place. Finished!

How to do it: step-by-step instructions

❍ Step 1:

First of all, baking soda and cornstarch are put in a bowl and mixed together. In addition there is the vegetable oil, as well as the essential oils. Together with the water, everything is mixed together until a sandy mass is formed. You should add the citric acid last, before portioning the mixture.

❍ Step 2:

Now it’s time to color. To do this, add a few drops of the food coloring to the respective portion and knead it until the color is evenly distributed. With all of this, it’s important that you work quickly to delay the reaction between baking soda and citric acid.

❍ Step 3:

If you have bath ball shapes, now lay out the decoration on the bottom and then add the mass. Press these well into the shape. To get multiple color combinations, it is best to put layer by layer in the mold, each of a different color. Then repeat this process with the other half.

❍ Step 4:

When both hemispheres are slightly filled over the edge, place them on top of one another and press them together so that a complete sphere is created at the end. After a short wait, you can then remove the ball from the mold.

❍ Step 5:

Now you have to wait, because the bath balls now have to dry for several days at room temperature. Alternatively, they can also be stored in the refrigerator. Thanks to the cold temperature, the bath balls are ready after five hours.

❍ Step 6:

When the bath balls are ready, they should be stored as airtight as possible. It is therefore best to pack bath bombs in small plastic bags.

If you want to give the bath bombs as a gift, just wrap in some foil and make someone happy. The bath bombs should be stored dry.  My tip: why not use some of your favorite perfume for the fragrance of bath bombs? Have fun making, giving away and relaxing!
