But you can also set up Skype on PC without a Microsoft account if you have Windows 8 or Windows 10. How this works and what steps are necessary for the establishment, you will learn in this practical tip.

In order to continue using your old Skype account on Windows 8 and 10, or to set up Skype on a PC with a new account but without a Microsoft account, you need the traditional desktop version of Skype. Follow these steps to install them. 

  1. Close the Skype Modern app and remove it from the tile overview. Uninstall the program completely.
  2. Download Skype for Windows from the Skype home page.
  3. Perform the installation as usual.
  4. Start Skype from the desktop or start the newly installed Skype from the tile overview of the Modern-UI.
  5. You will be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account. You can just ignore this message. If you click on it, you will be able to log in easily with your old Skype name.
  6. Alternatively, create a new account. Again, you do not need a Microsoft account for this.

Skype for Web: Talk without an account?

In the meantime it is possible to receive a call via browser plugin .

  • The caller simply sends a recipient an appointment and link via e-mail and the video chat can be conducted via the web browser. All you need is the Skype web plug-in.
  • Contrary to the announcement of Skype, however, you also need a Microsoft account or a Skype account.
  • Alternatively, use Skype for Web as a guest only. You will then receive a link to an individual room. However, this remains only 24 hours. With this link you can invite friends to chat.
