Not only in winter do lips dry out, but also in summer lips need sufficient care. That’s why many people like to use a lip balm. This provides the lips with moisture and protection against environmental influences.
1. The benefits of natural lip balm
It is often not so easy to find the right lip care for your lips. Many products from the drugstore market contain ingredients that are only partially suitable for application to the skin. For example, there are lip care pencils that contain mineral oil and paraffin. These two ingredients derived from petroleum are not what should be lubricated on the sensitive lip skin.
With a homemade lip balm, you have the possibility to determine the ingredients completely yourself. In addition, you do not have to resort to strong artificial lysmelling products, but can provide a pleasant smell with natural oils.
2. When making lip care, rely on natural ingredients

Many recipes include beeswax, honey and olive oil or coconut oil.
If you make your own lip care product, you have plenty of choice with the ingredients. You can use completely pollutant-free ingredients, which are also organic. If you want a lip balm that is vegan, this is no problem either. The individual ingredients can be adapted to your specific needs at any time within the recipes. A selection of suitable ingredients for homemade lip balm can be found here:
- Wax: beeswax, wool wax, carnauba wax
- Fat: cocoa butter, shea butter
- Oil: coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil
- Emulsifiers: lanolin, eucerine
- Additives: Essential oils, honey
Of course, you don’t have to use all these ingredients. Take a look at the recipe and decide what suits you best.
3. Make natural lip balm: steps
Good to know: With a homemade balm, ingredients such as beeswax or cocoa butter are the consistency generator, so that the balm becomes firm enough at the end.
There are many recipes, but if you’ve never made a lip balm, then a basic recipe is good for beginners. Later, you can vary or change the ingredients as you would like to make the lip balm yourself. First, read our guide to learn how to proceed step by step in manufacturing.
Melt the wax
If you have all the above ingredients together, the first thing you need to do is melt the beeswax or the respective alternative. To do this, weigh about 20 g of wax and then put it in a saucepan. Place the pot on the stove and heat the wax until it melts.
However, make sure that the pot does not get too hot and the beeswax does not burn. To prevent overheating, it is best to stop at the stove. Simply stir regularly with a spoon through the melting beeswax in the pot.
Add the vegetable oil and essential oil
If the wax in the pot is liquid, set the stove to the lowest level. Add about 5 large spoons of the vegetable oil and mix the two ingredients well together. Make sure that the wax and oil mix in such a way that a homogeneous mass is formed. Now the essential oil comes into play. Pour a maximum of 3 drops of oil onto the mixture and stir together again.
Fill containers

Lip balm with beeswax is particularly popular in natural cosmetics.
Turn off the stove and remove the pot from the stove top. Now you should work quickly before the wax cools and becomes firm. With a little skill you can pour the contents from the pot into small pots.
If this is not possible, you only have to fill with a spoon. However, be careful that not so much of the balm gets stuck on the edge of the döschen. Do not immediately seal the crucibles with the warm balm, but let it cool and harden well only overnight.

The more often you make lip balm yourself, the better you will be able to produce it over time. If you have tried several ingredients and developed the right sense of consistency, you can also dare to use a lipstick. Change recipes, for example by refining lip balm with beeswax with a teaspoon of honey. But also spices like a pinch of real vanilla or some cinnamon give the lip balm a great taste. Create fruity balm with essential citrus oil in summer and refreshing essential oils such as menthol or peppermint in winter.
6. This is how long lip balm is durable
Homemade lip balm does not contain any preservatives or other durable substances. Therefore, always keep the lip balm in the refrigerator. There he also stays nicely firm and does not become rancid over time. The balm lasts up to six months, but should be used up as quickly as possible. If you make too much lip balm, that’s not a problem either. DIY products are very suitable as a gift for friends or as a souvenir.
