Hairspray is hard to imagine not being in the everyday life of some men and women. With all the artificial substances contained, however, the question arises as to how healthy they are and whether so much chemistry is actually needed. We go looking for alternatives and give you tips on how to make hairspray at home.

1. Make your own natural hairspray

More and more people do not tolerate certain ingredients or want to do without plastic packaging. Although these projects are not always so easy to implement, it is fortunately easy to make hairspray yourself.

For the first recipe you need the following ingredients:

  • 50 ml distilled water
  • 5 to 15 g sugar (approx. 1 to 3 tsp), alternatively the appropriate amount of honey
  • a drop of essential oil (for a pleasant fragrance)

Mix the three ingredients together and fill them in a spray bottle. The DIY hairspray is already ready. The more sugar you use, the stronger the holding strength. By heating the water, the ingredients are easier to mix.

If you make hairspray yourself, you can do without preservatives. This is good for your hair, but it has an impact on durability. Therefore, it is best to store your homemade hairspray in the refrigerator. You can use it for about 3 to 4 weeks.

Due to the low effort, you can make new hairspray at any time. So it’s best to start with a rather small amount.

2. Make hairspray at home without sugar

You don’t necessarily have to rely on sugar when making your own hairspray. Therefore, the following alternative consists of these ingredients:

  • 50 ml distilled water
  • 1 to 2 ml argan oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Oil helps you with dry hair. If, on the other hand, you are more likely to lean towards oily hair, do not add oil. In addition, you can of course supplement essential oil if you prefer a certain fragrance.

If you want to smooth your hair rather, so you can resort to Aloe Vera. All you need is one tbsp of juice, 100 ml of water and some glycerine.

If you are not completely satisfied with your current hair color and want to lighten your hair a little, there is a mixture of 100 ml of water, 2 ml almond oil, 2 drops of chamomile oil and 15 ml lemon juice (resulting in about half a squeezed lemon). Now shake vigorously and the brightening spray is ready.

These alternative mixtures also have limited shelf life. It is therefore best to keep them in the refrigerator.

Tip: Coconut oil is also an additive for very dry hair. However, since it is only liquid when heated, it is only suitable if you want to invest time in heating every day.
