Love foaming hand wash but don’t want to keep spending money on it? No problem. In this project I will show you how to make foaming hand wash with normal soap liquid at home very easily. Just save the bottle from the last foaming hand wash you bought, and the rest is simple.
Make foaming hand wash: what you need
- (1) Foaming Hand Wash Bottle (I use a wash bottle Palmolive Foam Hand)
- (2) Normal hand wash liquid (any one works)
- (3) Water
- (4) Measuring cup
- (5) Aromatic essential oil of your choice (optional)
The foaming hand wash bottle pump has a special mechanism that forces normal soap liquid to come out as foam. But it works poorly with very thick liquid so we have to dilute it.
How to do it
Mix 50ml soap liquid with 200ml tap water (you can use distilled water if you want). We make it as a 250 ml solution as this is the size of the foaming container, but you can adjust the amounts if your container has a different capacity. Just keep the ratio as 1 part soap liquid to 4 parts water, depending on how thick your soap liquid is. You can optimize the recipe to bring your desired result. For example, you can mix 100 ml of soap liquid with 150 ml of water to make it creamier and richer. It’s just a matter of adjusting the ratio until you get the effect that is perfect for your personal taste.
Add in a couple of drops of essential oil of your choice if you want to add a particular scent. I find that clove, tea-tree and other aromatics like patchouli work very well, because you only need a tiny amount. Lemongrass and ginger are also good.
Shake the bottle carefully so that the solution is evenly mixed. And you’re ready to go. Believe it or not, it’s that simple.
Start to pump, and you will see that it has dispensed the same foam it has dispensed with its original liquid. It works great and makes the hands smell amazing.
Make foaming hand wash: how much you save
1 bottle of store-bought foaming wash (with essential oils) costs about $5. 1 500ml bottle of standard store-bought soap liquid also costs about $5, but you only use 50ml to make foaming hand wash yourself. So the cost of your DIY hand wash is 50c, plus the couple of drops of essential oil… let’s say another 2c at the most. So you have saved roughly 90% of the cost.
Yes, you do have to look at the cost of buying a bottle of foaming wash to get the bottle, but you probably already have one at home. And you can reuse the bottle for as long as you want. It’s just a one-time investment.
