How to make a drum from a flowerpot

flowerpot drum

It will keep your child occupied and amused to make a drum from a flowerpot and baking paper. It is a great toy for toddlers, and a project they can get involved in making with you. It is a great project for a rainy day. But be sure to let the glued drum top properly cure and dry completely before the child starts playing it.

Materials to make a drum from a flowerpot

Flower pot with hole (here 22 cm), 8 layers of baking paper from the roll, pencil, scissors, wallpaper paste, brush, acrylic paints, large rubber bands

Requirement level: easy

Time: approx. 15 minutes + drying times

First, according to the packing instructions, sufficient paste is mixed up.

If the flower pot is not newly purchased, it should be cleaned before the start and be completely dry. It is also important for a beautiful sound that it has a hole at the bottom.

First, the flower pot is placed upside down on a layer of baking paper and a semicircle is drawn parallel to the edge with plenty of distance from the top edge. It is okay if the pot opening on one side protrudes above the edge of the paper.

The semicircle is cut out, but it doesn’t matter if it is not exactly the same for all layers.
Cover each piece of paper with glue. The paper is then tightly stretched over the opening, so that there is about the same amount of paper everywhere over the top edge.
If possible, no air should be included when glueing the layers. In addition, the layers should only be carefully smoothed, so that too much pressure is not applied that would cause a rip in the paper
All 8 layers are glued and superimposed on top of each other.

The over-hang is smoothed down over the top edge..

Before drying, the rubber band is stretched around the pot so that the paper edges do not stand off unnecessarily after drying.

The drum can now be decorated a bit, whereby not the whole surface should be painted, so that the sound of the drum is not distorted.

The drum made of baking paper is a great instrument for toddlers, which can be made very easily by yourself.

In this way, children can be introduced to music and rhythm at an early age. Especially popular are ‘weather noise’ games (light rain, hail, thunder, etc.).
