How to choose the best motorcycles for women

Motorcycles for women

This guide outlines what to look for in choosing the best motorcycles for women riders.

There’s nothing quite like the freedom that comes from riding the open road on a motorcycle. The traditional image of motorcycles has always been a big muscular tattooed man dressed all in leather, riding a meaty, motor-roaring Harley down a long piece of Western highway.

But in the 2020s more and more women are taking to motorcycles, not only for the sheer enjoyment of the ride, but also because in these times of over-the-top gas prices, becoming a biker makes total economic sense.

But be warned, riding motorcycle no matter what your gender, can be a dangerous endeavor. Says The Barnes Firm, Los Angeles motorcycle accident attorneys, accidents involving motorcycles can be nothing short of devastating.

They often involve life-altering circumstances for everyone involved. It doesn’t matter how safe and responsible the motorcycle rider is. All it takes is one bad move or a distracted driver to cause a major accident that can result in serious injury or even death.

When it comes to motorcycles, it’s important for you to choose the right bike that suits your needs, including your safety. According to a new report, you won’t find any motorcycles that are specifically designed for a woman, be it a business woman or a stay-at-home soccer mom.

Best motorcycles for women

You won’t find a list of “the best motorcycles for women,” either. But there are motorcycles that that are said to be more popular with women bikers.

That said, here are some of the best motorcycles that seem as though they were engineered with women riders in mind.

The Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 SuperLow

The uber popular Harley-Davidson company first introduced the Sportster 883 SuperLow model 883L, back in 201l. The new model is said to have relaced the older XL 883L. The L stands for Low which makes it popular as one of the motorcycles for women (and shorter dudes).

It’s also considered an “entry-level model” and women are said to be the most rapid growing segment of new Harley Sportster 883 riders.

The Star Motorcycles V Star Custom / Classic (650)

Since 1997, the V Star Custom and the V Star Classic have been one of the most popular of the Star Motorcycles’ inventory. Star is said to be the cruiser brand division under the Yamaha label. The bikes are designed for women who want a low center of gravity, low seat height, and a powerful but manageable engine.

The only real difference between the two bikes is the styling. Some women prefer this motorcycle as their first and yet others trade up for something a little bigger and more powerful.

The Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom

It should come as no surprise that another Harley has made the list of motorcycles for women. Harley-Davidson is said to have produced a variety of Sportster 1200s over the course of the last few years. Lots of women are said to be riding the 1200 Custom, but others have also taken to the 1200L.

Since Harley is the leading motorcycle brand among women riders, it comes as no surprise that the Sportster 1200 is near the top of their favorite bike list.

The Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe

Continuing with the Harleys, their Softail Deluxe model is the first motorcycle preferred as motorcycles for women that’s considered a “heavyweight.” It’s said to be the “big-twin” Harley model women are preferring to ride the most.

Big twin is defined as a motorcycle that’s powered by Harley’s larger V-twin engine that consists of 169cc or what’s also known as 103 cubic inches. It comes as no surprise that the Softail Deluxe is popular with women riders since it is a big bike that’s constructed with a very low seat height of only 24.5 inches.

It’s low center of gravity makes it easier for a woman to handle the added power of the big twin engine. Perfect for long touring days.

The Star Motorcycles V Star 950

What’s the fifth most popular of the motorcycles for women? The V Star 950. In fact, it’s second only to the Harley-Davidson in terms of female popularity. The V Star 950 in particular is said to be a “strong middle-weight contender” that’s very versatile in design especially as an “urban cruiser” or a bike that can be outfitted for long days of touring.

Its low seat height of 26.6 inches allows women of all sizes to handle what’s considered to be a larger motorcycle.
