1. Lawn care in spring requires various measures
Especially in spring, your lawn needs a lot of attention – fertilization is particularly important. Before you can take action, however, there is some preparatory work to be done. This includes, above all, the collection of foreign objects, such as foliage or fallen branches. In addition, the first mowing of the lawn should take place before fertilising.
Has moss nested in your lawn or does it appear matted? Has part of the lawn died? If so, you must first cover the area – i.e. remove moss and felting in a targeted manner. However, you should pay close attention to the soil temperature. Only from about 15 degrees Celsius can you even consider this measure. In the case of dead areas, it is also advisable to re-sow the lawn.
How to do winter lawnmower maintenance
If winter has added so much damage to your lawn that there is no hope, only one thing will help: digging and re-creating the lawn. Care must be taken to remove the old lawn at least 5 centimetres deep so that the new lawn has enough space.
2. Step by step guide to care for lawn in spring
The ecological aspect of the lawnA person’s oxygen needs can already be met with two square metres of healthy lawn. Accordingly, a beautiful, healthy lawn is not only an optical enrichment, but also an ecological one. The proper care of your lawn therefore pays off.
In order to optimally care for your lawn in spring, the following step-by-step guide will help you. To get the best results, you should do the individual care measures in the order listed:
- Uncovering the lawn
- Mowing and trimming
- Vertikutieren and Airing
- Limestones of the soil
- Fertilize
- Possibly sowing lawns
2.1. The cleaning of the lawn
Before you can really start taking care of your lawn, it is important to remove broken wood and old foliage. This way you prepare your lawn for further steps and give it optimal growth opportunities. Foliage, for example, causes too moist areas that can damage the growth of the lawn.
There are mole hills on your lawn, but you don’t want a subtenant? Then tighten the exits and remove the piles. Remember, however, that the visually impaired rodents are often protected by nature conservation.
2.2. Mowing and trimming
During April is usually the optimal time for the first lawn mowing. Make sure that you do not set the cutting height too low: Four centimeters are considered optimal for the first cut. Finally, it can still get cold in April, which can lead to damage to the roots if the lawn is too short.
Insofar as no further care measures such as silting or fertilizing are carried out after mowing, a subsequent mulching can also be very useful. The mulching itself already fulfils a certain fertilising function and protects your lawn from frost or at low temperatures.
2.3. The vertication and ventilation
Usually, a lawn grows only from a ground temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. If you’re aerating too early, moss and weeds may have the ability to spread further. Even if it may seem different at first glance, you should also pay attention to the lowest possible penetration depth when verticalizing.
To remove moss in the lawn, weeds or other unwanted plants, your verticist does not need to penetrate deeper than 3 millimeters into the lawn. If you plunge too deep, you may damage the lawn and hinder its growth. Too frequent aerating weakens your lawn and may require you to see. It is best to limit yourself to a maximum of two applications per year.
The ventilation of the lawn is considered to be much gentler than the vertication. Nothing penetrates the ground here. Their lawn is only “combed” by special steel springs. Therefore, ventilation of your lawn is also much more often possible.
2.4. The lime of the soil
Lime is used to protect against weeds, because weeds in the lawn depend on acidic soils. You can use lime to move the ph value in favor of your lawn. However, the lawn needs several days of rest after calcifying before you can continue to deal with the care.
2.5. Fertilization
Once the lime has been applied, you can use lawn fertilizer. Your lawn absolutely needs additional food after the winter. In addition, there are special lawn fertilizers, which you can find in any well-stocked specialist shop or DIY store. When fertilizing, you should always make sure that you distribute the fertilizer as evenly as possible to ensure uniform growth of your lawn.
The best way to do this is to get a fertilizer spreader. For particularly large areas, attachment fertilizer spreaders for lawn tractors are also available. It’s best to fertilize on a cloudy day with a view of rain. The rain helps your fertilizer penetrate deeper into the soil.
2.6. Sowing the lawn
After a particularly harsh winter, your lawn may die in places. Here, only sowing with fresh lawn seeds usually helps. Early autumn is the optimal time for reseeding.
3. Adjust your care for lawn diseases or plagues accordingly
Which diseases or plagues affect your lawn depends mainly on the weather. For most problems, however, it is sufficient to thoroughly cover the lawn. The basic requirement for this is that you determine the infestation at an early stage. Otherwise, only chemical aids that affect not only your wallet, but also the environment will help.
4. FAQ

If you want to avoid expensive sowing, it is best to use rolling turf.
