How to clean a hair straightener or curling iron

clean a hair straightener or curling iron

Every day you use the straightening iron or curling iron and style your hair with it, then quickly pull it out of the socket and have it disappear deftly in the closet. Here, cleaning is often neglected, because the main thing is that the smoothing iron fulfils its purpose at the moment and smoothes or curls properly for the current elegant hairstyles. However, in the long run it is a bad idea to neglect it, because residues on the smoothing irons do not do well at all when smoothing and this should definitely be avoided. Our guide explains how to clean a hair straightener or curling iron.

Why do we have to clean a hair straightener or curling iron?

To protect the hair from the heat, you should use heat protection before smoothing. However, these care products are also to blame for our smoothing iron being polluted and thus no longer working properly. When hair care products such as hair spray, heat protection or oil are deposited on the surface of the straightener or curling iron, the heat is no longer evenly distributed and this can lead to hair breakage and split ends on your hair. So you should always clean a hair straightener or curling iron on a regular basis to keep it — and your — in the best possible condition.

Clean a hair straightener or curling iron: how to do it

We recommend the smoothing iron from time to time to clean a little reason and to counteract the whole process. However, it is important that the smoothing iron should only be cleaned in the cold state and should never be cleaned in a hot state, because you can quickly achieve the opposite. After use, allow the smoothing iron to cool for about 30 minutes and only then take the cleaners to hand.

What to use

In most magazines, it is recommended that you simply take a damp cloth and clean the smoothing iron. The problem here is that although the coating remains intact, on the other hand, the dirt on the heating plates can only be removed laboriously.

Therefore, a professional tip, because many beauty pros swear by using an iron cleaner, or even a ceramic cooktop cleaner. On the one hand, these substances remove the stubborn dirt much better and on the other hand they do not attack the sensitive surface of the smoothing iron.

If you want to remove the stubborn residue on the heating plates in the future, then always let the smoothing iron cool after use and then clean it briefly with a damp cloth. A microfibre cloth by itself is excellent for this, as the ‘tooth’ of the microfibres does a great job of removing the residues from your hair products that end up on the heating plates, but the cloth is gentle and does not damage the surfaces.

What NOT to use!

Important: It is also often advised to clean the plates with nail polish remover, which gets rid of any dirt, but attacks the coating very strongly and is therefore not recommended under any circumstances. The same applies to glass cleaner. The glass cleaner also removes the encrustation and deposits. However, it also can damage the plates and surface of the hair tool.
