Activities like gaming and voice chat usually don’t require a lot of bandwidth, but they do require quick and reliable responses. In addition, these programs usually don’t send information again if it doesn’t get there. So if packets are lost in transit , they are gone forever, which can also have a significant impact.

You may be wondering, “What is packet loss?” or “Why should I care?” Well, packet loss is simply when a packet cannot be delivered. It’s sent, maybe even received by the server, but it’s lost somewhere. It’s like sending a message to a server, but the server never receives it, or the other way around (it sends it and doesn’t reach you). Regardless of the direction, this is bad.

The causes of packet loss are often the same as the causes of network problems. The core problem is often network congestion. Too many users are trying to use a network connection at the same time, and the network routers cannot process what to do with all packets fast enough that they have to drop some packets. 

Bandwidth

You should check how much of your bandwidth is being used (either through your router or with Resource Monitor or Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on MacOS, or System Monitor on Ubuntu or a similar program, depending on your system) and see if this bandwidth can supported by your network with a speed test. 

Even if you’re not using more bandwidth than your network and internet connection can handle, the number of packets can still lead to an overload. However, it’s difficult to measure how many packets programs are sending (unless you’re using macOS) and what you can touch. However, you could try running multiple tests with different settings and guessing how your connection at least works.

Bad connections

Another likely cause is a bad cable, bad WiFi connection, bad router, or bad network card. If any part of the connection is broken or damaged, packets can be lost there. You should try switching from a wireless connection to a wired connection or swapping parts to see if that solves the problem. However, you can do this on your personal network as well as on that of your Internet Service Provider (ISP)) occur.

First, make sure you don’t just overwhelm your connection. Try doing more tests with smaller sizes and less frequent packages to see if it works well with less intensive use. You can also check if you are using too much bandwidth:

Compare your current bandwidth usage

Check the bandwidth page of your router. How exactly it works depends a lot on the router, but you can usually get there via the IP address. Enabling the router is the best option as it will reveal all of the devices connected to the network.

  • In Windows, open Resource Monitor and check the Network tab, or open Task Manager and check the Performance tab.
  • Under MacOS, open Activity Monitor and check the Network tab.
  • There are many tools on Linux that you might want to use, such as: B. bmon, slurm, tcptrack, ifotp, nethogs, speedometer, iptraf, and a ton more. If you’re using Linux, you should probably be able to find out for yourself.
  • On Ubuntu or Mint, you can also open the System Monitor and check the resources.

If your usage is high compared to your maximum bandwidth, try using less and see if that fixes the packet loss. Or, you can buy more bandwidth from your ISP if that is an option for you.

Test your hardware

Next, test all of your hardware. If possible, connect your modem (or wherever your Ethernet connection is coming from) directly to your computer. If that fixes the problem, replace the router or wireless card. If this persists, you can try using a different cable, network card, or computer.

If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s likely with your ISP and they need to fix it. You should try to call them up to let them know of your problems and attempts, and pray that they will do something about it.
