Washing machines with a good energy efficiency class offer excellent savings potential. But that doesn’t help much if mistakes occur during washing that strain the wallet, so with a few simple switches, you can save money on laundry.

Towels, bed linen, worn clothes – the washing mountain is getting bigger every day. At some point it’s a big washing day. It simply belongs to the regular household chores and is often done on the side – washing in, adding detergent, flap closed and off you go.

But right here is the mistake. You should pay a little more attention to washing clothes. Because if you look closely and refrain from old habits, you can save money on washing – and this is not about buying a new, more energy-efficient machine.

8 tips to save money on laundry

❶ Sort laundry in advance

Proper sorting of the laundry extends the life of the garments. First things are sorted according to the recommended temperature. Only then is the color divided – white – colorful – dark.

Pay attention to laundry that needs a special detergent, such as wool or functional laundry that needs to be washed with a mild detergent.

❷ Fully loaded

An important criterion for saving relates to the filled washing drum. Whereas a few years ago 5kg washing machines were the norm, today the trend is with 7kg washing machines. This value always refers to dry laundry. Of course, a mountain of laundry is difficult to estimate. To get a rough overview, you can simply stand on the scales with an empty laundry basket and a full laundry basket.

The washing machine will seem pretty full, but that’s exactly right. The drum fill level should be fully used with every wash, because this saves money.

TIP: If you don’t want to step onto the scales every time with a loaded basket, you can also measure the appropriate volume with your hand. For the optimal filling volume, a hand’s breadth should fit between the laundry and the drum. This way, detergent and water can spread well.

»By the way: Today’s washing machines even have an automatic quantity control. This means that water and energy requirements are automatically adjusted to the load.

❸ Go for a long wash

If you wash longer, you wash cheaper. The energy consumption for short wash programs is significantly higher than for eco programs. The reason is quite simply that the machine has to heat the water in a short time and therefore has to use more energy.

The programs that take between three and four hours to complete a wash are suitable for saving money.

❹ Keep the temperature low

Most of them wash their laundry at 40 or 60 degrees. After all, it’s supposed to be really clean. This also works at a lower temperature. Honestly, which laundry is really really dirty, except for special workwear from construction workers etc. or children? That is rarely the case.

Experts recommend that the laundry can always be washed at a temperature lower than specified. If the blouse says that it should be washed at 40 degrees, 30 degrees is sufficient. The right choice of washing program also has an impact on the costs.

However, to avoid bacteria accumulation, the machine should be washed at 60 degrees once a month. This is enough to kill the bacteria in the machine and to remove odors and any detergent residues.

❺ Pretreat stains

So stubborn stains during washing are removed, many people still use the pre-wash. However, this is not necessary if the stains are pretreated, preferably as soon as possible. Gall soap, for example, is highly recommended here. That removes almost all stains on all materials and at every washing temperature.

❻ Buy the right detergent

The trade is full of detergents, but there are only two areas – powder and liquid detergents. Here you can further subdivide into color detergents, mild detergents for wool and silk and heavy duty detergents with optical brighteners and bleaches for white laundry. Normally, detergents with brighteners only develop their full effect at 60 degrees, but experts point out that they also work very well at 40 degrees thanks to special activators. You can confidently turn down the temperature and save a lot of money.

❼ Dispense detergent correctly

In addition to the optimal detergent, the right dosage is also important. The detergent should be dosed according to the water hardness, the degree of soiling and the loaded laundry. For example, hard water requires more detergent than soft water.

You can find out the water hardness at the local waterworks. You can also determine the hardness yourself using affordable test strips. The determination can be carried out quickly and delivers very precise results.

You can get a dosage recommendation regarding the degree of soiling on the back of the respective detergent. However, make sure that the stated quantities mostly refer to washing machines with a load of 4.5 kg. If you use a larger filling volume, you have to convert. However, some detergent manufacturers have already updated their data.

With a dosing aid, which you can get free of charge from many providers, you can then measure the corresponding amount of detergent exactly.

❽ Dry the laundry on a line

For the sake of simplicity, most people now put their laundry in a tumble dryer. So you have the least work with the laundry. That’s probably true. However, many forget that a dryer is a real energy eater. It is much cheaper if you dry your laundry on the line as usual. If you choose lower revolutions when spinning, your laundry gets a little wetter from the machine, but you don’t have to iron your laundry afterwards . High speeds are only possible if you then throw the laundry in the dryer, such as with towels. The drier the laundry moves into the dryer, the less energy it needs to dry.
