What are the best ways to tell a fake vs genuine Gucci bag? Our illustrated guide points you to all the clues to avoid buying a fake.
Gucci bags are iconic objects, whether they are evening bags, shoulder bags or carrier bags. Based on authenticity features, you can learn how to distinguish an original from a fake.
Gucci has a very restrictive distribution policy. Therefore, you can buy Gucci bags either in a Gucci boutique, through the original Gucci online store and a few other online stores. So be suspicious of online stores that offer Gucci bags and check carefully to see if it is a fraudulent webshop, a so-called fake shop.
Ways to tell a fake vs genuine Gucci bag
Gucci is one of the most famous luxury labels in the world. Craftsmanship, elegance and worldwide renown characterize the image of this historic company. This success and image are also the reason why all Gucci bags are massively copied by counterfeiters and fraudsters sold as fakes.
Gucci Materials and Workmanship
Authentic Gucci handbags are professionally made from high quality materials. If you have a bag with the typical Gucci “GG” logo, such as the Jackie O Hobo, make sure that the “GG” logo on the canvas is always symmetrical and clearly printed.
For leather bags, the logo is always clearly punched in, but never printed.
The seams on the pockets are always perfect and evenly crafted. The thread is sewn at a slight angle, and therefore does not run 100% in a line.
Metal Applications (Hardware)
All metal parts such as buckles, chains or zips wear the Gucci lettering to make us feel massive and heavy.
The zipper has the lettering “Gucci” embossed on the back. Due to the perfect workmanship of real bags, the zipper of an original Gucci bag should always be easy and easy to open. If this is not the case, it is very likely to be a forgery.
Gucci leather tab with lettering embossing (Heat Stamp)
All bags are stamped with Gucci lettering (a hot embossing). This lettering is always inside the bag. New pockets have a leather tab on which the stamping is imprinted. If the bag has an inner pocket, then the leather tab is sewn on there. In older bags, the leather is stamped into the inner lining or sewn on.
Each bag has the following embossing:
For the logo, check that the letters are absolutely symmetrical, so all letters have exactly the same height. For the “U”, the left part of the letter is thicker than the right part of the letter. In addition, all letters are arranged in the middle of the ®.
New Gucci models also have a sewn-in fabric label that wears a QR code-like pattern.
Gucci Serial Number / Model Number
All new bags have a model numberon the back of the leather tab (see above), which is often also described as a serial number. The code consists of 10-13 numbers divided into two lines.
The code in the upper line describes the respective pocket model, e.g. 408825 for the Hobo Soho. In the case of counterfeits, the production code is either not available, or sometimes only thinly printed or thinly punched.
TIP: Visit the Gucci online store. There you search for your bag and compare the model number given on the website with the code in your bag. If it is not the same, it is most likely a fake.
Notes for older Gucci bags
Many older Gucci bags were delivered with a model number in the late 1990s and early 2000s. You may not carry the code on an extra tab, but punched in the inside of the pocket (e.g. on the linen material). In addition, for older pockets, the number code of the upper row may be interrupted by a hyphen or a period.
