Not only useful for neglected hair washes – the advantages

Dry shampoo not only helps us when we don’t have enough time to wash our hair. It is also a good utensil in other situations that you do not want to do without.

An example: Braided hairstyles are impossible with freshly washed hair. After about two to three days, things usually look different. Then the approach is usually greasy again . To make the hairstyle work, just add a little dry shampoo to the roots, massage it in and then tackle the braided hairstyle. In this way, the hair not only becomes easier to grip, but also receives more volume.

The dry shampoo also has the advantage that, unlike daily hair washing, it does not damage the scalp. It develops a higher sebum production through daily washing and forms unsightly dandruff. Dry shampoo often doesn’t get this far.

Basis of homemade dry shampoo

It is said that you can easily make homemade dry shampoo using two ingredients. In many cases, up to four ingredients are used. It is important that there is always an ingredient that absorbs sebum. So the excess fat is absorbed in the hair and therefore they look like freshly washed.

No spray bottle is necessary for storage. Most dry shampoos can also be stored in a jar with a lid. In addition, the spray cans that you get in the drugstore mostly produce propellant gases, which is not exactly environmentally friendly. There should also be an object ready to stir the mixture.

Different recipes for making dry shampoo

Below we have written a few recipes that are suitable for preparation without problems.

Simple dry shampoo

The ingredients are as follows:

  • 2 heaped tablespoons of corn or potato starch
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp soda

For the mixture, put all the ingredients through a sieve and stir again. Afterwards you can already use the dry shampoo. Here’s another tip: The cocoa it contains is particularly suitable for dark hair colors. But if you have red hair, you can use cinnamon instead. The use of corn starch is recommended for lighter hair. The shampoo also gets a pleasant fragrance from the cinnamon or cocoa.

Special dry shampoo for lighter hair

The above recipe can also be used for light hair with a slight modification, but there are separate dry shampoos that are especially suitable for light hair. The recipe is:

1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon white healing earth (mineral clay powder)

The two are mixed together. As an alternative to the corn starch, arrow root starch or a very fine flour can also be used.

Thanks to its different colors, healing earth can also be used with other hair colors. A brown healing clay is suitable for dark blonde or light brown hair. A red healing clay is available for redheads.

Additional fragrance for dry shampoo

While the mixture with cinnamon or cocoa already has a good smell, there are other tips for other recipes to give them a pleasant fragrance. Ideally, an essential oil is used. About two to three drops are usually sufficient for a mixture. At the same time, the oils have a positive influence on the hair. It is best to use the following oils:

lavender oil• promotes hair growth
sage oil• soothes the scalp
Tea tree oil• antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal
• irritation of the scalp is relieved
peppermint oil• helpful for quick greasy hair
rosemary oil• reduces dandruff

It is important that you test the essential oils for compatibility before putting them in dry shampoo. This is best done on the arm. Here you simply add a drop of the oil and observe whether a reaction takes place. If the skin becomes red or itching develops, the oil should not be used in dry shampoo.

Tip: You benefit twice in summer, because the scent of essential oils repels mosquitoes .

Alternatives for dry shampoo

Dry shampoo - alternatives - make homemade dry shampoo

If the above ingredients are missing in the household, there are other alternatives for a dry shampoo. To be mentioned here:

  • Baby powder: usually works even better than healing clay, is easy to dose and easy to apply. It also smells nice.
  • Flour: The great advantage of flour is that you actually always have it at home. It does not matter whether it is wholemeal or white flour. It is an optimal alternative, especially for lighter hair color.

It is important that you do not take too much of both. Therefore, you should first be economical with the application and add more if necessary.

Correct use of homemade dry shampoo

Since there are no instructions and no packaging for home-made products, here is a brief introduction to how to proceed with your own shampoos.

  • The hair should be combed thoroughly first.
  • Then you put a towel around your shoulders so that excess dry shampoo is not spread over your clothes or skin.
  • Then you take a small amount of the shampoo and massage it into the scalp with circular movements.
  • An alternative of the application is the salt shaker, with which the application is much easier.
  • The cosmetic brush is also a clean affair. With it, the dry shampoo can be applied specifically to the hair. Then you just have to massage it in.
  • Excess powder is now removed with a towel or a brush.
  • It is important to take your time brushing. A brush with natural boston is particularly suitable for this.

Finally, it is then very easy to style yourself as usual. Cleaning the brush afterwards should also be a matter of course.

Conclusion – make natural dry shampoo yourself

You only need a few ingredients for your own dry shampoo, which are often already available at home. The good thing about it: users know what’s in their shampoo, protect the environment and wash their hair even when things need to be done quickly.
