Is it difficult to build a walk-in shower? No, but there are some important things you have to consider before you start the job. When retrofitting a floor-level shower, there may be construction problems that cannot be solved without major interventions in the building. Of course there are still solutions. We’ll show you.
Problems with installing the walk-in shower can happen. What can be solved on the ground floor with a cellar underneath becomes a problem with some, especially older, ceiling constructions: where to put the drain? But there is one (emergency) solution: raise the level shower area by about 10 to 15 cm in order to leave the actual floor undamaged.
Things to watch out for when you build a walk-in shower
Screed too thin: To install a hard foam element or a shower channel , the screed must be removed . It is often necessary to pry out the concrete slab underneath. An architect or structural engineer should give his okay here beforehand.
Beam ceiling/floor: For beam ceilings above which is a bathroom, a floor-level shower can only be installed if the drain runs parallel to the beams or beams and if the floor above the beams is thick enough. Otherwise the shower level must be changed.
Shower tray replacement: If you replace the old shower tray with a floor-level shower, you will have to replace the missing tiles and tile the floor connection. Most of the old tiles are no longer available. Possible solution: a mosaic tile border.
Big and small flows of water
When choosing your shower, always look at the siphon and the diameter of the drain connection. For example, if you have a large overhead shower installed when modernizing, you need a drain that can swallow 40 to 50 liters per minute. In addition to a gradient of 2% (= 2 cm / m), a siphon connection piece with a 50 mm diameter is required. It creates 0.8 liters per second (= 48 l / min.) At ∅ 40 mm it is only 36 l / min.
