1. Teenagers and children love ketchup

Especially many teenagers and children eat ketchup for everything that comes on the table. Adults also like to eat ketchup, but then mostly more as a dip to different dishes and not as a sauce. And tomato ketchup is also very suitable for cooking. Because of its diversity, the food is also so popular.

In Europe and America, three different types of ketchup are generally distinguished: tomato ketchup, spice ketchup and curry ketchup. For all three types of ketchup, the tomato forms the basis. These ketchup varieties are often eaten with schnitzel, sausages, fries, potato wedges, croquettes, pasta dishes and of course hamburgers, hot dog and co.

Tip: However, ketchup tastes best when made from sun-ripened tomatoes.

2. Something for every taste

In addition to the three types of ketchup, there are of course also some varieties, which differ in their aroma by their ingredients and thus offer something for every taste. For example, there is ketchup made with Mediterranean ingredients, ketchup, which tastes very spicy and smoky, and which has a mild taste.

3. A homemade tomato ketchup recipe is healthier

Anyone who has ever made their own ketchup knows that it not only tastes much better than bought, but is also much healthier. If you make ketchup yourself, you can decide for yourself how much sugar you put into the tomato mass. You can also choose how your ketchup should taste. Just let your imagination run wild when you put it together. Just try it and make your own tomato ketchup. How this works best, we will tell you with our homemade tomato ketchup recipe in 6 steps.

Step 1: Prepare ingredients

If you want to make this homemade tomato ketchup recipe yourself, you only need 500 grams of tomatoes, half an onion, vegetable broth, some vinegar and sugar, as well as spices like pepper and salt and who likes some garlic.

Step 2: Skin tomatoes

First, blanch the tomatoes so that the skin can be removed better. If you have removed the skin, then you need to cut the tomatoes in small pieces.

Step 3: Puree tomato pieces

Then you have to puree the tomato pieces and let the puree cook for a few minutes.

Step 4: Bring all ingredients to the boil

Now you have to add the pureed onion and garlic clove, some vegetable broth, 20 millilitres of vinegar, a spoonful of sugar, pepper and salt. Now let the whole thing simmer on a small flame until the mixture has reached the desired consistency. Stir frequently so that it does not burn.

Step 5: Season to taste

Now it’s about refining the ketchup. Basically, you can refine both homemade and purchased ketchup with some spices. If you like it a little sharper, you can also add a bit of chilli or cayenne pepper to the ketchup. If you like to eat Mediterranean ketchup, you should use some thyme, basil and rosemary, for example.

Step 6: Fill containers

If you have tasted your ketchup, then fill it in glasses and leave to cool. Empty jam jars are very suitable for this.

As you can see, you can easily make your own ketchup. Unfortunately, such a homemade ketchup can only be used for a week, because it is prepared without preservatives. You should therefore always use up your homemade ketchup within a few days.
