How to make stale chips crisp again

Hardly anything ruins a cozy TV evening as reliably as stale chips. If there is no more crunch in the bag, for many it is a case for the garbage can. However, there are still opportunities for rescue. Our guide shows you tips to make stale chips crisp again.

Even if chips do not have a healthy reputation, they are among the most popular snacks. Especially in the evening, when an exciting film is on TV or when you are sitting with friends in a relaxed atmosphere, many people like to reach into the chip bag and enjoy the crispy potato slices. But what if they have lost every crunch and can simply be described as lax? Don’t worry, you don’t have to throw away chips in this case. There are actually a number of ways to give the snack a renaissance and make stale chips crisp again.

Trick to make stale chips crisp again

The following household tip is as simple as it is ingenious. If chips are no longer crispy it is because they have absorbed too much moisture from their surroundings. Conversely, this naturally means that this moisture must be extracted to make stale chips crisp again.

Chips as well as pretzel sticks, crackers and other snacks from the “nibble” category can easily be made crispy again. They just have to be put in the warm oven for a short moment.

Here the excess moisture is only extracted from the snacks. So you won’t be baked a second time or anything like that. It is therefore sufficient to heat the furnace only slightly. All temperatures above 75 degrees are simply a waste of energy and not necessary.

The same trick to make stale chips crisp again also works in the microwave or in a mini oven. It is only important that the device in question generates enough heat to allow the excess moisture in the chips to evaporate.

Integrate stale chips into different recipes

If even the oven or microwave no longer helps, you don’t own any of the appliances, or you feel like a little experiment, you can consider another form of rescue.

Stale chips are ideally used for other purposes and can be integrated into various recipes, for example. How about a spicy breading of chips, for example? Or an exciting crunch in soups and purees?

Admittedly, it is not exactly commonplace to integrate chips into your daily menu in this way. But if you bring the necessary dose of experimentation and sometimes dare that something goes wrong, you may soon create your new favorite dish in this way.

»Additional tip: If a breading that consists entirely of crumbs of chips is too spicy, you can simply mix the lazy potato snacks with standard breadcrumbs.

  • Chili con carne with tortilla chips
  • Potato soup with paprika or rosemary chips crunch
  • mixed salad with shredded chips (as a substitute for croutons)
  • Wraps of your choice and shredded chips

This keeps chips crisp for a long time

Of course, there is also the option of storing chips in such a way that they do not become lax in the first place, but remain crunchy for a long time. There are a number of household tips that everyone should know:

❍ Store chips in cans:

Regardless of whether it is a branded tin or a no-name product, plastic or sheet metal – it is important that the storage box for chips does not let air through – and therefore no moisture. This is the only way to ensure that the snacks stay crispy for a long time.

❍ Zip bags:

Plastic bags with zip closures are not only indispensable when traveling by plane, they also help to save chips from becoming lashed. Simply bag it, seal it airtight and enjoy in small portions.

❍ Clips and brackets:

Not quite as successful as cans and zip bags, but at least better than nothing are special clips or (clothes) clips that can be used to close a chip bag. This technique is particularly useful if you know that you will eat the chips the next day or evening.

Snack boxes: The ideal solution for single households

Especially people who live alone or with a chip refuser know the problem of the loose chips. A standard bag of chips is simply too big to eat in one ride. The health aspect also prevents many from emptying the bag immediately.

If you are familiar with this problem (and you prefer a certain variety with regard to snacks), then you should look for so-called snack boxes the next time you shop. These party classics not only have the right snack for every taste, they are also ideal for fighting the lazy chips.

The solution to the riddle: Use scissors to carefully cut a single chamber out of the snack box and then only open it. This way, you not only have a perfectly portioned snack, you also protect all other snacks from becoming lax.

Simply make potato chips yourself

Conventional chips from the supermarket or discounter not only come in inappropriate quantities, they are also made with the help of many unnatural flavor enhancers. Homemade chips, on the other hand, have a natural taste and can also be portioned so that there is nothing left afterwards that can become lax. If you simply want to make potato chips yourself, you need:

❍ Ingredients:

  • potatoes
  • rapeseed oil
  • Spices, such as pepper, salt, paprika powder and french spice
  • water
  • peeler
  • grater
  • bowls
  • Spatula
  • baking paper
  • baking sheet
  • oven

❍ Make chips yourself

  1. Peel the potato and cut it into thin slices either with a peeler or a kitchen grater
  2. Put in a bowl and pour water over it
  3. stir and wait for the starch to come out of the potatoes
  4. Drain water
  5. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees circulating air
  6. Put the oil and spices in the bowl
  7. Mix everything well so that oil and spices stick to all potato slices
  8. Place baking paper on the baking sheet
  9. Spread the potato slices on the baking sheet and make sure that nothing overlaps
  10. Bake crisps in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes
  11. Use a pan turner to put the baking sheet in a bowl
  12. Let it cool down (only then will the chips become really crunchy)
  13. enjoy

»Tip: If you like it even more natural, you can also season your DIY chips with rosemary, thyme, oregano or other herbs. Coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper also ensure a unique taste experience.
