How to make wraps to treat coughs

wraps to treat coughs

In case of a severe cough, the entire chest usually hurts. Home remedies such as quark or onion, made as wraps themselves, bring rapid relief. Our guide shows you how to make wraps to treat coughs with 6 different kinds of wrap.

A wrap is the external application against various complaints. Usually soaked or infused with ointments, cloths are used here, which are then placed simply or multi-layered around the corresponding body part.

When coughing, it is precisely the warmth of the wrap that has an analgesic effect. It ensures that the coughing stimulus settles and fixed mucus is released. But also cold wraps are used as home remedies. They are always used when something is to be pulled out of the body, such as fever, in the case of a severe cold.

How to make the best home remedies for colds

Potato wraps to treat coughs

The potato is of course not eaten in this case, because here only the warming effect is used as a remedy against the cough. Especially with dry cough, the potato wrap can have a dissolving effect and at the same time also analgesic, if the constant coughing already hurts the entire chest.

What do you need?

  • 5 – 6 potatoes (best floury boiling)
  • 1 cloth as base for the mashed potatoes
  • 1 larger cloth (bath towel)

Make your own potato wrap – Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Cook the potatoes (about 20 minutes). If they get a little softer, it doesn’t matter.
  2. Spread out the smaller cloth (preferably linen).
  3. Squeeze the drained potatoes and the peel on the cloth until a pulp-like mixture is formed.
  4. Now distribute this potato jam evenly.
  5. Then fold the outer edges of the cloth so that the porridge cannot escape.
  6. Important: Check the temperature before the wrap is placed on the chest, otherwise there is a risk of burns!
  7. Finally, just place the large cloth over it and leave the wrap on the body until it has cooled down.

Quark wraps in case of cough

Quark has anti-inflammatory effects in any way and is therefore not only used as a home remedy for coughing. A quark wrap has already proven itself in the case of joint or sore throats. The reason for this is the capillary effect, which is said to be the cold quark. This means that it removes something from the body, for example inflammation or fever. However, the quark should not be used as a home remedy for cough, better to preheat to room temperature.

What do you need?

  • Skimmed quark (about 500 g)
  • 2 well-drained cloths (dish towel, diaper)

• Make quark wraps yourself – How to proceed:

  1. Spread both cloths on one table.
(If you only want to make a wrap, a cloth is enough).
  2. Place the quark on the center of the cloth and swipe smoothly.
  3. Now turn the edges of the cloth so that the quark is embedded in the cloth.
  4. If the quark does not yet have room temperature, you must preheat it.
  5. Then place the wrap on the chest and upper back and leave it there overnight.
  6. If there is a freezing or general malaise, the quark wrap must be removed immediately.

Lemon wraps to treat coughs

If you feel that you are getting a cold, use the old trick with the hot lemon. Lemon has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. We also give the body missing vitamin C. But the lemon is also ideally suited for external use. Especially with a stubborn, stuck cough, a lemon wrap helps.

What do you need?

  • 1 – 2 lemons
  • Citrus press
  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 cotton cloth
  • 1 ink to cover

Make lemon wraps yourself – Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Halve and squeeze the lemon.
  2. Fill a bowl with warm water and add the lemon juice.
  3. Soak a cotton cloth in the mixture, squeeze it and place it on the chest.
  4. Wrap the second, thicker cloth over it.
  5. In case of itching or burning, remove the lemon wrap immediately.

Breast wrap with olive oil

With this home remedy for cough, the warming effect is used again. Olive oil is not only a popular ingredient in the kitchen, but can have antispasmodic effects in case of coughing attacks.

What do you need?

  • approx. 200 ml olive oil
  • Cotton
  • Cardigan or bathrobe or wool sweater

• Make breast wraps with olive oil yourself – Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan. Be careful not to get too hot.
  2. Then spread the warm oil on the chest and back.
  3. Cover or wrap with the building wool cloth.
  4. To amplify the heat, now put on a bathrobe and mumble. Alternatively, a cardigan or a sweater is also possible.
  5. Renew the wrap when the olive oil has cooled.

Onion wraps in case of cough

The onion is one of the oldest home remedies and is used for its mucous and decongestant effect for a variety of ailments. In our case, the onion is the cough-still par excellence and a wrap or rather, an onion bag is quickly made.

What do you need?

  • 2 medium onions
  • 1 tea towel
  • 1 shower towel or small blanket
  • Twine or kitchen yarn

• Make your own onion wrap – Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Peel the onion and cut into small pieces.
  2. Place the cut cubes on the tea towel.
  3. Beat the corners upwards and tie together into a bag.
  4. Pour the water into a cooking pot, put the lid upside down.
  5. Heat the pot or water on the stove and place the onion bag on the upturned lid.
  6. If your onion wrap is warm enough, place it on the chest and hit with a blanket or shower towel.

Lavender wraps to treat coughs

The essential oil in lavender has an analgesic and germ-killing effect, especially in the case of coughs. A wrap with lavender oil relaxes the irritated airways and thus improves the general condition. However, a simple massage oil with lavender is not enough, as the concentration is too low.

What do you need?

  • Lavender oil (100% natural)
  • Sunflower oil or olive oil
  • Cotton cloth or diaper
  • Scarf or large shower towel

Make your own lavender wrap – How to proceed:

  1. Mix two to three drops of lavender oil with a tablespoon of sunflower oil.
  2. Place the oil mixture on the spread cotton cloth.
  3. Heat the cloth in the microwave lightly (do not let it get too hot).
  4. Place the oil cloth on the chest and wrap it with another cloth or a thick scarf.
  5. Depending on the heat, the lavender wrap can remain on the body for up to two hours.
