Excessive humidity in rooms can not be unpleasant, but can also lead to serious problems. Mold is particularly easy to fix and is difficult to remove if the room moisture is permanently too high. In our article we therefore show you what a good indoor climate looks like and with which home remedies you can lower the humidity in your home. 1. The ideal indoor climate in the apartment

Relative humidity is a value that determines how much water the air has absorbed. All values between 0 and 100% are conceivable. If the humidity is 100%, the air is no longer able to absorb even more water.
So the water has to accumulate at some point. This is particularly common in the bathroom shortly after showering when the mirror is fogged.

The optimal humidity in rooms is between 45 and 55%. In the bathroom, slightly higher values of up to 70% are usually achieved, which are still okay.

The warmer the air, the more water you can absorb without it being found on the walls or windows. Accordingly, even proper heating can help to reduce the humidity.
Good to knowIf you want to determine the humidity in rooms, use either a simple hygrometer or a modern weather station. Indoor and outdoor devices are particularly well suited to show you when it makes the most sense to ventilate. 
In general, the following temperature recommendations apply in living rooms:

  • Bedrooms: 16 to 19 °C
  • Cuisine: 20 to 21 °C
  • Living and dining room: 21 to 22 °C
  • Study: 21 to 23 °C
  • Bathrooms: 22 to 23 °C

Even a temperature increase of one degree can significantly help to reduce the relative humidity, as the ambient air can absorb more water.

If you want to lower the humidity, you have various home remedies at your disposal, which we would like to introduce to you briefly in the next sections.

Please note that moisture can also accumulate in some places in poorly insulated houses or in the area of metal windows, although the humidity is correct. This is due to cold bridges where the dew point is lower, so the local temperature is very low, making it easier to have moisture and mold.

2.1. Lowering the humidity in your home by heating

Many problems arise by saving energy. For example, the heating is only turned on when we are at home. In itself, this is quite a possible option, but can quickly become a problem in rather humid rooms. If the walls cool down too much, this reduces the local absorption of moisture and can cause mold.

By the way, no energy can be saved in this way, as the heating system has to work very hard during the presence time. A more uniform temperature, on the other hand, ensures better energy values. Lowerings should therefore not exceed 2 degrees.

In addition, it makes sense if cabinets are not directly on the wall so that the air can circulate.

2.2. Airing regularly – this is how it works properly

It is best to ventilate a room about two to four timesa day, depending on whether you are in that room or not. Air only for 5 to 10 minutes, but with wide open windows or doors. Ideally, ventilate the entire living room at once, so that the heaters can quickly heat the air again in winter.

In summer, however, it is much lighter, as humidity rarely develops into a problem due to the higher temperatures.
Nevertheless, you should also pay attention to regular ventilation in the warm season.This is especially true after showering or bathing.

Many weather stations have a recommendation for ventilation, which is pronounced depending on the internal and external measured temperature as well as humidity.

2.3. Minimizing moisture sources

Not all houseplants require a lot of water.

It’s not just humans and animals that increase the humidity in a room. Ornamental fountains, aquariums and plants can also be used as moisturizers.

While a well can still be easily set aside, hardly anyone wants to give up their beloved plants.
Nevertheless, it may make sense to think about a change.

For example, you can rely on plants that release relatively little moisture to the environment and increase the humidity in your home only minimally. All plants that require little water themselves are eligible.

In particular, the:

  • Palm trees
  • Cacti
  • and succulents

Another major problem is the drying of clothes. If the laundry is hung in the apartment after washing, this massively increases the moisture content.
If possible, dry your laundry outdoors or a separate basement room.
Alternatively, increase the room temperature a little at short notice and ventilate a few more times.
However, the window should never be tilted.

A lot of water vapor is also produced during cooking. An extractor hoodthat goes outdoors can remedy this situation. The classic circulating air hood, on the other hand, only filters odours, so that additional ventilation is absolutely necessary.

2.4. Typical DIY remedies to lower the humidity in your home

If you want to lower the humidity further or if the previous tips are not sufficient, you can also use one of the following home remedies:

  • Salt: Distribute salt bowls in different places in the house. It binds moisture and can thus contribute locally to lower the humidity. It is therefore particularly well suited in the area of typical liquid accumulations.
  • Rice: A rice bowl looks less decorative. In this way, however, very good results can be achieved.
  • Cat litter: Even if you don’t have a cat, you can use the agent to bind moisture. Depending on the variety, this can go through as a decorative article and thus hardly stands out.

With all three means, you must be careful to replace them regularly, as the storage capacity is limited and the effect of reducing the moisture content in the home is otherwise lost.

3. Lower the humidity in your home basement

Depending on the size of the cellar, different drying devices can be considered.In many older houses, the basement is insufficiently insulated, so moisture is relatively easy to penetrate.
In addition, the low temperature is a major problem.

Ideally, therefore, you only ventilate if it is colder outside than in the basement. In summer, the early morning hours are best.

In addition, you can resort to a professional dehumidifier. Since such a device causes noise, it is only used in exceptional cases in residential areas.
In the basement, on the other hand, this aspect should not disturb you any further.

Unfortunately, good dehumidifiers require a lot of energy. On the other hand, a permanently damp basement can affect the load-bearing capacity of the entire building,so you should carefully consider whether it makes sense to save a little money at this point.
