Best holiday destinations for March: city trips

Munich in March

For an ideal short trip in March we recommend Munich. In luck there is already the first “beautiful weather wave” (we even had 20 degrees). Beer garden are already open in March. An ideal way to get around is to explore the city by bike, making it one of the best holiday destinations for March.

St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin

You like it green and you like great folk festivals with parades, live music, food, Guinness beer, lots of entertainment and, if necessary, proper party? St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide on March 17. But nowhere with the authentic flair that is the case in the Irish capital Dublin. Because this national holiday also has its origins in Ireland.

Visitors from all over the world come to enjoy the friendly and international atmosphere of Dublin and immerse themselves in the colourful hustle and bustle. In Dublin, however, not only the day itself is celebrated, because at the same time the four-day St. Patrick’s Festival takes place. Enough time to explore the typical Irish pub culture and other Dublin attractions.

The Semana Santa in Seville

If you visit Seville in March, you can experience the Semana Santa. This holy week is celebrated intensively in many Catholic Spanish-speaking countries. Nowhere in Spain but like in Seville. The whole city impresses with countless processions, traditional music and medieval ambience. The Semana Santa takes place every year at Easter from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.

In addition, a holiday in Seville in March is perfect, as the temperatures are neither too cold nor too hot. Note, however, that especially for Semana Santa many people want to come to Seville and the hotel prices can be accordingly high. If you want to explore Seville in peace, you are better advised with every other week in March.

Cape town

Cape Town has many great sights and highlights that you should not miss. It is not for nothing that Cape Town was already the number one destination of the New York Times. The surrounding area also has so much variety to offer that you will certainly not get bored. The most popular travel time for Cape Town is the period between the end of January and the end of April in the dry summer months, making it one of the best holiday destinations for March .

The first thing you can think of as Cape Town is Table Mountain. And you must have seen the view from above yourself. Adventure-seekers can then glide down by “abseiling” or using a paraglider. Back in Cape Town you can take a wonderful tour of the city by bike. Company’s Gardens and Kirstenbosch Gardens are also worth a visit.

As an absolute highlight in Cape Town are helicopter tours. Katrin has already made three different routes over Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope or the Winelands.

To really get a complete impression of the city, you should also have spent at least one day in a township. Only in this way can you see the other face of Cape Town or South Africa. Due to poverty, however, many tourists avoid these places, which is a pity, as they have a lot to offer those wanting to see the real South Africa — and any tourism helps their economy.  If you still have time, you should take a trip to Robben-Island.

Something completely different: A road trip through Jordan

You’d rather if there aren’t so many tourists on the way? The climate shouldn’t be too hot either? Then March could be the perfect month for a road trip in Jordan.

Unlike many surrounding countries, Jordan is considered a safer country to travel. Nevertheless, it is often underestimated as a destination. The country has some real highlights to offer! These include the desert landscape of Wadi Rum, the fascinating Dead Sea, the landscape of the Dana Nature Reserve – the largest nature reserve in Jordan – or a visit to the country’s largest attraction, the rock town of Petra.

Cuba

Everywhere you can read it: Better to travel quickly to Cuba before the Americans come and authentic Cuba is a thing of the past. How quickly the changes will catch up with Cuba as a result of the opening up to Americans is purely speculative. If you definitely want to experience the “old” Cuba with its unique flair, then you probably have to fly to Cuba as soon as possible.

What is the “old” Cuba? First and foremost probably (yet) a country of opposites. On the one hand, the poverty of the people and, on the other, the wealth of nature and culture, which many see as in danger. Cuban cigars, Havana rum, rickety vintage cars stuttering across the streets of Havana, loud music in the alleys and streets, enchanting beaches and pure joie de vivre: these are some of the most famous associations with Cuba.

Regardless of the mood of upheaval: Cuba is an ideal destination for a holiday in March. The temperatures are very pleasant. Because it is warm at low humidity. In addition, the otherwise dangerous storms usually do not occur until later in the summer time. Good conditions for a trip to this Caribbean country in March.

Best holiday destinations for March: Europe

Andalusia in Spain

Not only in Seville, but generally the whole region in southern Spain Andalusia celebrates the Semana Santa in the week before Easter. This means that there are also many processions and city festival feeling to be admired elsewhere. And all this with fewer tourists than in Seville.

Nature lovers can already enjoy spring in Andalusia with pleasant temperatures of often over 20 degrees. Blossoming almond trees, white villages (e.g. Ronda) and deep gorges ensure perfect hiking atmosphere at this time of year. In summer it can get really hot in Andalusia. After all, Africa is also just around the corner. Therefore, March is a highly recommended month for a trip to Andalusia.

Douro Valley in Portugal

The Douro is one of the longest rivers on the Iberian Peninsula. It originates in Spain and flows into the Atlantic Ocean in the north of Portugal. On the enchanting slopes of the Douro Valley, the vines grow for the typical Portuguese port wine, which wine lovers from all over the world have come to appreciate. Due to its beautiful landscape, this region has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sure, a wine tasting is a must if you’ve been there before. Since wine is far from everything, you can explore the Douro Valley on hikes, by car or even from the train. A special highlight, however, is when you take the river on a boat trip of several days. Overnight stays are possible, for example, on most wineries or sometimes on the ships themselves. A combination of the itinerary between ship and train is also possible.

Long-distance travel in March

Costa Rica

In March there are much fewer tourists in Costa Rica, because there are no holidays in the USA. It is dry season and therefore all regions are more easily able to travel by car.

Colombia

Colombia is still a real insider tip for a trip to South America. In addition to the most varied landscapes, you can relax in March on dreamlike Caribbean beaches, visit numerous national parks or overcome several altitude meters in the Andes. A trip to one of the many colonial towns or to one of the remote villages, where you can disappear into an earlier time, is also worthwhile.

If you really like “busy”, you can explore the capital Bogota or one of the other big cities like Medellin, Cali or Cartagena. Is this really safe or rather dangerous? Clearly Colombia was in the news with cocaine mafia and guerrillas from time to time. Currently, however, it is one of the safest countries in South America. Of course, you should avoid some areas such as poorer neighborhoods in the cities.

In March, the rainy season in Bali is coming to an end and the epic sunsets with a Bintang beer or a coconut on the beach are back on the agenda. With the scooter you can drive past beautiful rice fields, discover waterfalls, marvel at the many mystical temples and taste some local specialties like the world-famous Nasi Goreng at a Balinese “Warung” (restaurant). Best of all, the large tourist flows arrive in Bali later.

Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper – skiing in the Rocky Mountains

How about a wintry road trip to Canada? More specifically to the Rocky Mountains? I guarantee you the finest “Champagne Powder” on the ski slopes. There’s a lot to see: The Icefields Parkway is legendary. Overcrowded in summer, a dream in winter.

Chamonix in France

In addition to Austria, Italy and Switzerland, there are also really nice winter sports resorts in the Alps in France, which make the hearts of all snow lovers beat faster. One of the largest and most famous is Chamonix on Mont Blanc. In March you will still find good snow conditions. However, since the winter holidays are over in most of the federal states, it is easier to find suitable accommodation.

If you have always wanted to let off steam on the highest mountain in the Alps with well over 100 kilometres of slopes and enjoy beautiful views, you are right in this French ski resort. Here everyone will find the right piste for their own level. A special highlight should be the descent at Point de Vue from the summit of the Grand Montets. There is also a snow park and departures for freeriders.

Sweden

You need variety and would like to see something different from the Alps during your winter holiday? Then the ski resorts in Scandinavia could be interesting for you. Especially if you have full pistes and large crowds a thorn in your side, there are some insider tips in Sweden. However, everything is known to be a little more expensive there.

A beautiful ski resort in Sweden is located on a lake that is icy in winter: a garden. It is the largest and most varied winter sports area in Northern Europe. Winter sports enthusiasts in Sälen, Vemdalen, Tärnaby-Hemavan and Branäs will also get their money’s worth. In addition, some crazy activities such as ice fishing, dog sledding, waterfall climbing, heli-skiing or safaris with the snowmobile are possible in many places in Sweden. This makes your winter holiday an unforgettable experience.

Adventures in March

Iceland with a chance at the Northern Lights

While spring is slowly beginning in most other European countries, in Iceland everything looks like winter. However, the days are finally getting longer again. So more time for discovery tours during the day. Iceland has a lot to offer: impressive natural spectacles, lonely and abandoned places, volcanic tours, black lava beaches and much more.

If you’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights, you’ve chosen a good month with March. These can be spotted in Iceland until mid-April and the weather is not as bad as in the harsh winter months before. If the weather is too cold, you can heat up properly in the mineral-rich 37 to 42 °C warm water in the Blue Lagoon thermal outdoor pool (Bl’a Léni’).
