A workbench is the heart of every workshop. But if you want to be robust and good, you have to dig deep into your pocket. A cheaper option: Build your own workbench!

Adequate work surface, a robust basic framework and a functioning power supply are important foundations of a workbench . Without enough space and a work surface that also makes it possible to work with heavy equipment , home improvement is only half as much fun.

If you have the worktop, the skeleton of the workbench and the power supply, can be customized. For example, lower and upper cabinets with practical storage solutions save you time later.
Build a workbench yourself: worktop and shelves
A sturdy hardwood panel made of core beech is the right work surface. The material is also the right choice for the storage compartments.
Saw the required boards once to length and width. You can also use the cutting service at the hardware store.
Treat the wood, as in our case, with hard wax oil . Here intermediate sanding is necessary between the first and second coat.
Screw clamps facilitate assembly. Apply glue to the surfaces to be joined. This gives extra stability.
Screws fix the connections (in this case the middle part with the later shelf) and deliver the required contact pressure for the glue.

Build a workbench yourself: basic framework and power supply
A frame made of varnished spruce squared timbers , a substructure with three open compartments and a wall cladding with shelf form the base frame for the workbench. For this purpose we use lacquered spruce timbers.
With a generous width of two meters and a mere 62 centimeters deep, our workbench offers plenty of space for DIY.
The frame for the worktop
For large boards (here the wall panel with shelf), take care of the 90º angle. Height-adjusted props help.
The wood should generally be sanded and the edges should be finished. The edge finishing of the boards takes place only after assembly.
The all- round painting of the legs and trusses is easy with screws in the end grain and a higher shelf.
Mark the exact positions for the holes. Slightly hit with the grains, then the drill no longer slips afterward .
The wood should now be pre-drilled so that it does not burst away. With a counterbore, you can prevent the harder wood from breaking.
This connection scheme applies to all workpieces mounted for this purpose. Mark, grit, pre-drill, countersink and screw.
The legs of the workbench connect to the upper compartment. For this you take 8 centimeters long screws. This is easier on the head.
Now screw the trusses with your legs. Pay attention to the height so that you can fit any cabinets later.
Angles additionally stabilize the short longitudinal bars. The basic structure of this massive workbench has now been completed.
The power supply
cable duct on the workbench is extremely convenient. Especially if it is mounted directly above the work surface on the back wall. You can equip it to your liking. The material is available at the hardware store or in specialist shops.
CAUTION: Have internals or electrical installations carried out by a specialist! In case of improper installation there is danger and the risk of injury or fatality!
Power supply for the workbench
After the appliance boxes have been inserted and the cables have been adjusted to the correct length, the cables must be stripped.
The sockets are connected in parallel in the cable duct in sequence and then aligned in the box and screwed tight.
A switch enables the current to be switched off. The connection cable is connected with wire end sleeves with switch and plug. The switch to be used must be approved for switching sockets. These special switches can be charged with up to 16A.
Screw the channel flush with part of the back wall. The height can be varied according to your wishes.
Screw the back wall to the table legs with a 20 cm overlay. During positioning, screw clamps and blocks help.
Now mount the table top. Simply push them against the back wall and screw them from below.
Measure the interstices of the cable duct and saw the cover to the appropriate length. Then just click it into place. Finally, mount the inserts of the sockets and frames. An outlet with USB port helps to charge mobile devices.
Personal safety switch (a residual current device switch) is available as an adapter for one device in the hardware store. Use outdoors and indoors equally possible. The workbench must be connected via a socket which is protected in the building distribution via a so-called RCD switch with a rated differential current ≤ 30mA (residual current circuit breaker). The illustrated personal protection switch serves as additional protection to the already existing facilities.
