How to clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner correctly

clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner

Powerful as ever, the Dyson vacuum cleaner does its job. As ever? Actually, it used to seem more powerful? And the filter and the brush do not look quite sparkling anymore? Then you should do a thorough cleaning, so that your Dyson achieves the usual results again. Every three to a maximum of six months you should clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner correctly to maintain the best performance from it.

Clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner

The name Dyson stands above all for wireless vacuum cleaners. But also the wired devices have found many users. To clean the vacuum cleaners, proceed as follows:

Clean filter (model DC28C and DC33c and higher)

  1. Disconnect the cable from the mains.
  2. Disconnect the cyclone unit with the container from the device by pressing the button to unlock the container on the side of the carrying handle (on the button you can see a representation of how the unit disengages from the device). For some models such. B. the Cinetic Big Ball Multi Floor 2, the release button is red and is located on top of the handle.
  3. Pull the filter out of the top of the cyclone unit.
  4. Keep the filter under running, clear water and wash it thoroughly. Above all, remove residues on the outside of the filter.
  5. Wring the filter out intensively.
  6. Expose the filter to dry for at least 24 hours.
  7. When the filter has dried completely, put it back into the cyclone unit and insert it into the unit.

The individual steps you can see in this video:

Clean filter (models up to / including DC29)

For these models, only the so-called pre-motor filter needs to be cleaned. The post-engine filter is lifelong ready for use and does not need to be cleaned or replaced.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the mains.
  2. First press the latch to remove the container.
  3. Pull on the lid lock and remove the washable filter.
  4. Keep the filter under cold, running water and wash it thoroughly. Do not use cleaning agents!
  5. When the filter is completely clean, allow it to dry in a warm place for at least 12 hours. Caution: Do not use a microwave, oven or similar to speed up the drying process.
  6. If the filter is completely dried, put it back in and assemble the device.

The individual steps you can see in this video:

Clean the container

  1. As usual, disconnect the container / cyclone unit from the unit and empty the container.
  2. Behind the red button for emptying the container is a small silver button. Use it to loosen the container from the cyclone unit.
  3. Keep the container under cold, running water and wash it thoroughly. Do not use detergents and never put the container in the dishwasher.
  4. Let the container dry completely. In the meantime use a cloth or a dry brush to remove individual residues from the cyclone unit. Attention: The cyclone unit must under no circumstances come into contact with water.
  5. When the container has completely dried, reassemble the unit. Make sure that all connections are firmly engaged.

Clean the brush

The brushes on a Dyson vacuum cleaner usually require no special care. However, with turbo brushes it can happen that the rollers do not rotate as usual because they are blocked. Then proceed as follows:

  1. Remove the turbo brush from the device.
  2. Turn the turbo brush around so you can see the bottom plate and the brush roll.
  3. Take a pair of scissors and carefully cut hair and fibers caught between the rollers. Be careful not to cut the bristles of the brushes.
  4. Pull the hair and fibers out until nothing blocks the rollers of the brush.

How to clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner: wireless

Dyson devices are considered premium products among wireless vacuum cleaners. They owe this to their high suction power, but not least their easy cleaning.

Clean filter

  1. Disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the charger. Be careful not to press the ON / OFF switch.
  2. Pull out the filter on top of the device. For the V11, you’ll need to turn it slightly counterclockwise.
  3. Knock off the dry dust.
  4. Keep the filter under cold, running water and wash it thoroughly. Do not use detergents and never put the filter in the dishwasher. For model V11, first wash the folded paper with the foam element facing down. Then clean the foam part. Keep the foam element down.
  5. Press out the filter (V11: the foam) until the dirt is completely removed and the water remains clear.
  6. Expose the filter to dry for at least 24 hours. Do not use an oven, microwave or similar.
  7. Make sure the filter is completely dry. Then put the device back together.

The cleaning on the example of the V6 you can see in this video:

Incidentally, the model V8 also has a post-engine filter. This can be removed and cleaned in the same way as the filter of the V11.

Clean the container

  1. First empty the container as usual.
  2. Remove the container from the device. Depending on the model, press once again the red empty button (V6), the red container lock on the back of the container device (V8) or the red release button on the container rail (V11).
  3. Carefully wipe the container with a damp cloth. Attention: Do not use cleaning agents and never put the container in the dishwasher.
  4. Clean the cyclone with a dry brush.
  5. Make sure the container is completely dry again. Put the device back together and make sure all parts click into place.

Clean the brush

  1. Use the release button to release the floor nozzle from the suction pipe.
  2. Use a small coin to turn on the side cover and remove the brush roller.
  3. Remove the contaminants from the brush roller.
  4. Make sure that there are no contaminants at the connection end to the suction tube that could block the unit.
  5. Reinstall the brush roller, close the cover and attach the nozzle to the suction tube.
  6. Finally, wash your hands to avoid skin irritation.

Clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner: with cord

The Dyson vacuum cleaners with cords are the “little siblings” of wireless vacuum cleaners. The cleaning process is similarly similar.

Clean filter

  1. Disconnect the device from the power point or charging station.
  2. Press the top of the vacuum cleaner on the switch and release the cyclone from the rest of the unit.
  3. Take out the filter.
  4. Rinse the filter under cold, running water and carefully squeeze it out. Do not use detergents and do not put the filter in the dishwasher. Clean the filter until the water stays clear.
  5. Let the filter dry for at least 12 hours. Do not use an oven, microwave or similar to speed up the drying process.
  6. Make sure the filter is completely dry. Then put the device back together. Make sure that all connections engage carefully.

For vacuum cleaners, the filter should be washed once a month.

The individual steps you can see in this video:

Clean the container

  1. Empty the container as usual and separate it from the cyclone unit.
  2. Clean the container with a damp cloth. Do not use detergents.
  3. Carefully clean the cyclone with a dry brush.
  4. When the container has completely dried, reassemble the unit.

Clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner: brush version

The technique of a brush vacuum cleaner offers a particularly high suction power. The cleaning of the devices is only slightly more expensive than the wireless “colleagues”.

Clean filter

  1. Disconnect the device from the mains.
  2. Remove the clear container from the unit by pressing the latch on the top of the container.
  3. Remove the first of the two filters (“Filter A”) by sliding the catch on the top of the container and removing filter A.
  4. For filter B, open the cover on the ball. Depending on the model, unscrew the blue lock counterclockwise and remove the cover or press the lock button. Then remove filter B.
  5. If Filter A is in a plastic cassette, remove the cassette before cleaning.
  6. Wash both filters under cold, running water until the water is clear and the filters are completely clean. Do not use detergents and never put the filters in the dishwasher.
  7. Knock off filter B after washing to remove excess water.
  8. Allow both filters to dry in a warm place for at least 24 hours. Filter A must be stored horizontally. Do not use a stove or a microwave or similar.
  9. When both filters are completely dry, put them back into the unit.

The steps for the Dyson Ball Compact, DC50 and DC51 are shown in this video:

Here are the steps for the Dyson DC24:

Clean brush and floor nozzle

Brush and floor nozzle usually have no special cleaning needed. Over time, however, foreign objects may accumulate in it that block the device. They are easy to remove (example for DC51):

  1. Disconnect the device from the mains.
  2. Put the device on the backside.
  3. Pull the red release away from the floor nozzle and remove the floor nozzle.
  4. Lay the floor nozzle with the brush down on a flat surface. Turn the two red levers upwards.
  5. Pull the bottom plate upwards so that the brush roller is exposed.
  6. Remove the foreign matter from the brush or cut the sucked hair and threads carefully and pull them out.
  7. Put the device back together. Make sure that all connections engage carefully.

The individual steps you can see in this video:

In no time it will be back to the old suction power

A suction loss?  The concern for a long life? There are many reasons to pay special attention to a Dyson vacuum cleaner now and then. Depending on the model and use, the filter should be washed every one to six months to show full use again. When you wipe out the container at the same time, it prevents unpleasant odors. And if you then keep the brush free of debris, your Dyson will always suck up everything properly and strongly.
